Personality

Landar is naturally a friendly person, quick to laugh and protective of friends and his colleagues. Despite this he carefully maintains a friendly distance between himself and others. Unfortunately he tends to put greater store in his own intelligence and abilities, and can feel slighted if he feels that his view or opinions have been is counted out of hand. In addition he has an addictive personality.

A steady hand, Landar rarely loses his head, and is usually calm under fire. As befits a future Starfleet officer he is widely read. With an addictive personality he has been known to occasionally overindulge when drinking alcohol, though he is far from being an alcoholic. Following a childhood incident on Bajor, Landar developed an allergy to spiders, and an acute dislike of the dark.

Primary ambition is to graduate Starfleet Academy. Eventually Landar hopes to distinguish himself enough to earn a Chief of department position aboard a starship or starbase. More prosaically he wishes to learn to play the Kata Lute (a Bajoran musical instrument), and finish reading the plays of William Shakespeare.

A voracious reader, he delights in history, interstellar relations, and plays of all kinds. Rockclimbing and canoeing are favoured pastimes and he takes the chance to pursue it in the holodeck every chance he gets. Gadgets are a particular interest of his - the latest technological developments and discoveries fascinate him endlessly.

History

Some short years before the end of the Cardassian Occupation, Landar was born at home in the small hamlet of Chakon deep inside the Wyntara Mas Province on Bajor. His mother Ela was a very spiritual woman and a devout believer in the Prophets and the Bajoran Way. His father Arun on the other hand was not, he was a respected Colonel and pilot in the Militia who had participated in numerous rebel attacks during both the Cardassian Occupation and the Dominion War.

The Bodan family line was heavily influenced by the military with many generations serving in the militia according to their d’jarra. Landar barely saw his father as he was participating in the rebel attacks against the Cardassians. When the Occupation ended, Arun always talked about a better day for the Bajorans, preaching to his children not to accept anything less.

When the Dominion War erupted, Landar's father once again helped in the battle leading the Bajoran space force into numerous sorties, stating it was the best possible thing for Bajor. Seeing his father always return from the battle Landar grew to admire his father and his military actions.

Naturally Landar’s father nurtured an early ambition within him to join the military, something he felt almost destined to do. However, since the end of the Occupation the Starfleet presence on Bajor had increased greatly and the famed Militia had become nothing more than a planetary police force. Landar decided to apply to Starfleet Academy on Earth and after passing the entrance exams was offered a place.

Three days before he was due to depart for San Francisco on Earth his father died, victim to a freak accident aboard a military transport vessel on a routine trip from Ferenginaar. The loss of his father turned Landar inward, and as a result he turned down the opportunity to join Starfleet. His normally overt confidence was shattered and he found his grief hard to deal with. His mother Ela began to exert her influence on him more and more, helping him deal with his wrought emotions and opening his mind to the Prophets of the Bajoran Way and all things spiritual.

Landar’s spirituality grew over the coming years and at the age of 21 he was offered a place to study at the Shikina Monastery in Bajor’s capital city Ashalla. This was the turning point in his life, a decision time of sorts. He had to decide which path his life was to follow, a religious life leading ultimately to a seat on the Vedek Assembly, or a life exploring the galaxy in Starfleet.

He felt that in order to truly honour his father’s memory a Starfleet career was the only real option he had and decided to see what the galaxy had in store for him.
