Personal History

Vanris was born the second of three siblings to one of the oldest Vulcan families in Nal'shin - the city of tears. So named because it was in the time before Surak a vast city full of beautiful art and architecture which became a painful battleground for the great wars. After the embrace of logic, Nal'shin was rebuilt both as a celebration of peace and a reminder of the horror of war, an atmosphere that still permeates the city today. Nal'shin is a point on the pilgrimage for Kolihnar, an ever-present reminder for those undergoing the cleansing of what can be destroyed by emotional vengeance.

Vanris' family have long been connected to the priesthood on her father's side and art on her mother's side. For many generations they have been a family of Vulcans who know they have strong emotions born into them and work tirelessly by the tenants of logic to overcome them and live by the peace of Surak. Vanris' mother and her two siblings found their outlet for controlling emotions was art. Vanris, on the other hand, found a pleasurable calm in physical exercise, namely running. As a child she spent hours challenging herself on cross country hikes and long distance runs. Even a dangerous tumble and broken leg when she was 10 did little to discourage her. She found a peaceful solitude and a chance to release her emotions to focus on her training in logic when she ran. At the age of 16, she was hailed as the fastest runner in the province and she continues to train this skill.

Vanris accepted all of Surak's trainings, and is a devoted student of the Kohlinar. But she did not feel a calling to study in the priesthood like her father, nor did she display the artistic talent of her mother and siblings. Her father decided that there was a restlessness inside of her, and it was logical to allow her to stretch her legs so long as she continued to walk the path of Surak while doing so. Vanris was a solid student with admirable grades, and was accepted into Starfleet Academy under the general studies program. Her love of running translated into a love of flying and she is studying to be a helm officer as well as taking basic science, tactical and engineering courses.

Vanris is young for a Vulcan, and she struggles with questions of whether she has found the correct path for her life to walk. Unlike so many of her academy companions, Vanris is something of a 'jack of all trades, master of none' which gives her the feeling like she is wandering. She hides this insecurity under logic and quiet introversion, as she seeks her best place in Starfleet.

Rollcall

Hello,

My character is Vanris, a female Vulcan. My top three choices are:

  1. Helm
  2. Engineering
  3. Tactical

In real life I'm a professional theatre technician working with community development. I have been a Star Trek fan since I was 5 years old, and I love DS9 the best. I have been interested in Vulcans since I saw Spock as a kid, and I'm very excited to try writing for one.

I am ready to train!
