Born from the fires of the Dominion War, the Vesta Class starship was designed as the Federation’s ‘return to exploration’ multi-mission explorer. With state of the art technology, the Vesta class was an entirely new breed of starship. First placed in service in 2380, it serves as a testbed for various new and experimental technologies for Starfleet, helping to advance starship design in general. From weapons to propulsion, the Vesta class has been instrumental in bringing theory to reality all across the Federation and to its allies.

Unlike other Vesta Class vessels, the '''USS ''Excalibur''''' (Vesta Refit) was not automatically outfitted to the extent of others of her class. Instead, she was given minimums that allowed the outfitting and testing of various items belonging to a diverse number of systems throughout the ship as needed for research and development purposes. While this does dramatically reduce her overall firepower and capabilities compared with those of her sister ships, it allows for a flexibility which those vessels in turn do not enjoy.

It is also for this reason that she was christened Excalibur.  Those intimately involved in the project viewed her as a ‘hope for a brighter future’ forged in the flames and blood of one of the deadliest and costliest crises the Federation, along with her allies, had ever faced. The name ‘Excalibur’, that of the legendary sword gifted to King Arthur Pendragon on Earth by the Lady of the Lake, represents the ushering in of a new era of exploration, science and technological development.

* All personnel quarters are located on decks 2, 4–6, 8–10, and 19.
* Individuals assigned to the {{USS|Excalibur|A}} for periods over 6 months are permitted to reconfigure their quarters within hardware, volume, and mass limits.  Individuals assigned for shorter periods are generally restricted to standard quarter configuration.
* Personnel of the same classification are permitted to combine adjacent quarters to create a single, larger dwelling.

Enlisted crewmembers share quarters with one other crewmate, though the rooms can be double-bunked to sleep up to 4 people.  Enlisted quarters are slightly smaller versions of the quarters assigned to NCOs and ensigns, and typically include 2 bedrooms with standard beds, connected by a living/working area.  A washroom with ultrasonic shower is located off of each bedroom.  A food replicator and a personal holographic viewer are located in the living area.  Pets are not permitted in these quarters.

Standard living quarters are provided for both Starfleet non-commissioned officers and ensigns.  These personnel are expected to share their living quarters with another crewmate due to space restrictions aboard the ship.  Two NCOs or two ensigns are assigned to a suite.  Accommodations include 2 bedrooms with standard beds, connected by a living/working area.  A washroom with an ultrasonic shower is located off of each bedroom.  A food replicator and a personal holographic viewer are located in the living area.  Small pets are permitted in these quarters.
===Senior officers===
: ''Lieutenant Junior Grade through Commander<br>Located on Deck 4''
Starfleet personnel from the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade through Commander are given one set of quarters to themselves.  In addition, department heads and their assistants (regardless of rank) are granted such privileges as well, in an effort to provide a private environment to perform off-duty work.  Accommodations typically include a small bathroom, a bedroom with standard bed, a living/working area, a food replicator, an ultrasonic shower, personal holographic viewer, and provisions for pets.
===Commanding and Executive officers===
: ''Located on Deck 2''
The commanding officer and executive officer of the {{USS|Excalibur|A}} have special quarters.  These quarters are much more luxurious than any others on the ship, with the exception of the VIP/diplomatic guest quarters. Both sets of quarters are larger than standard officers' quarters, and generally have the following accommodations: a bedroom with double bed, living/working area, bathroom with ultrasonic and standard water shower, food replicator, personal holographic viewer, and provisions for pets.

===Civilians and families===

Although Starfleet personnel fulfill the vast majority of ship functions, the diverse mission profile of the {{USS|Excalibur|A}} may occasionally require the skills and talents of civilians.  In addition, although having families aboard is not encouraged due to the extended periods in deep space and potential for danger, the Commanding Officer may, at their discretion, waive this restriction.  Both of these needs are met by a small number of special, highly configurable quarters in the forward sectors of Deck 8.  Depending on need, these quarters can range from single-room dwellings to larger, apartment-style homes with multiple bedrooms.
===Marines===

The living and working facilities for ''Excalibur'''s [[Excalibur Marines|marine contingent]] are located primarily on Deck 19.  The living quarters for marines are comparable to those allocated to their naval counterparts of equivalent personnel classification.
