USS Resolution Memorial on Deep Space 224
Memorial plaque inscribed with the names of the victims.

The USS Resolution Memorial is a memorial on Deep Space 224 that honors the deceased and injured victims, survivors, rescuers, and all who were affected by the destruction of the USS Resolution on Stardate 239810.13. The memorial is located on Decks 227 and 228, in a formerly vacant shop stall within the starbase's commercial sector. It is operated by a committee of the Commercial Sector Merchants' Association, who operate and maintain it on behalf of the station's residents.

Planning for the memorial began approximately one month after the ship was destroyed. Victims' families, survivors, and the residents of Deep Space 224 were invited to give their input in a series of open forums held in late 2398 and early 2399. The committee approved the final design in February 2399 and construction was completed two months later.[1]

Background

The USS Resolution re-entered active service in the Borderlands in mid-2397. Although Deep Space 224 was never Resolution's official home port, the ship was a frequent visitor to the starbase and there was frequent crossover between the two crews. On Stardate 239810.13, Resolution was destroyed in orbit of Rinascita Station, when a Genesis device detonated aboard the ship. Of the 115 officers and crew serving aboard Resolution at the time of the disaster, 102 survived. Fourteen people were killed when the ship was destroyed: 13 Resolution officers and crew and one Starfleet Intelligence operative who was serving undercover on Rinascita Station. The rescue and recovery operation, conducted by the USS Carpathia, took several days.

News of the disaster shocked the crew and residents of Deep Space 224, and an impromptu memorial was created on the Lower Promenade within hours of word reaching the station. In the early days, the memorial was also used as an informal information clearinghouse to confirm reports of survivors and lost. Later, a group of schoolchildren donated artworks to the memorial.

Location and design

The memorial is located in a shop stall on Decks 227 and 228. Previous tenants of the compartment include Darn It, a fiber arts shop, Stirred To Your Mother, a do-it-yourself wok restaurant, and Just Juice (formerly Bagels & More), a purveyor of fast casual breakfast items. The committee selected the compartment to be a place of "quiet reflection," largely due to its location in a relatively quiet part of the commercial sector, and its large viewports that look out into space. Andorian sculptor Ashrothiss th'Shaanniq and Benzite multimedia artist Dova submitted the winning design.

Emblem and obelisk

The memorial consists of a large disc featuring the emblem of the USS Resolution, which consists of a compass rose surrounded by the ship's name and registry number. At the center of the emblem is a large obelisk carved from a single, solid piece of Andorian granite. At the top of the obelisk, a beacon shines upward and projects a holographic image of Resolution in flight.

Plaque

At the base of the memorial is a plaque inscribed with the ship's name, registry number, and the quotation from its dedication plaque. It also displays the names of 13 officers and crew who were lost in the disaster. The name of the fourteenth victim, intelligence operative Liam Wyke, is not inscribed on the plaque, as he was not publicly identified as one of the victims at the time the plaque was made. He is represented on the plaque by a simple five-pointed star.

Dedication

The memorial was dedicated in a public ceremony on Stardate 239904.26. Prior to the ceremony, seven Resolution crew members held a private gathering.[2] [3]
