COUNSELOR REPORT: SD 239709.18
  • Condition: None
  • Counselor: Erin Ryle, MD, Starfleet Academy 118
  • Counselor Notes:
Cadet Tarkin has no telepathic or empathic abilities common to the Rodulan people. The patient was raised on a space station with a population of 86% Ferengi by Ferengi adoptive parents without Rodulan contact and likely never developed these abilities. He expressed feelings of inadequacy stemming from this but there is no indication of further psychological issues beyond feelings of disconnect from Rodulan culture. He sharpens his teeth to feel more connected with Ferengi culture and sees it as fashionable. Cadet Tarkin does not seem violent or aggressive despite how unsettling some might find his appearance.

COUNSELOR REPORT: SD 240108.02
  • Condition: None
  • Counselor: Arai Filli, MD, Starfleet Academy 118
  • Counselor Notes:
Cadet Tarkin was involved in a shuttle crash while retaking Pilot 101. One of his classmates from another class wrote a paper the following morning about the cause of the crash and proved that it was not his fault. It was difficult to get him to open up but he proved significantly more willing to talk over a game of Vulcan chess. He was patient while teaching me the rules and I’m pretty sure he let me win our first game. His performance in the second game seemed to confirm it.
He told me about the accomplishments of his parents as told to him by his adoptive parents. It was quite a story from his grandmother leading rebel armies to the mastermind style planning employed by his mother to escape slavery. He feels inadequate and incapable compared to his lineage, blaming himself for the shuttle crash. He thinks he should have noticed the malfunction sooner and reacted because he felt a change in the vibration of the engine. I believe these feelings of inadequacy represent a greater internal struggle the cadet has been battling through and do not originate with either crash, but his perception of his inability to overcome the piloting exam exacerbated these feelings significantly. He takes great pride in his acceptance to Starfleet Academy, and seems to believe that joining Starfleet is the closest he could ever come to living up to his family's legacy.
Scheduled a follow up session for next week.

Tarkin's course instructor had advised me that reacting sooner to the shuttle malfunction would not have enabled him to make a difference and referred to the crash as a Kobayashi Maru, seemingly feeling bad for Tarkin. When I told him this he seemed unconvinced and brought up his parents accomplishments in the face of great adversity. He then changed the subject and brought up struggling with guilt about how his father's legacy impacted many Cardassian civilians. He also admires what his father accomplished for those under his care making his relationship with his fathers history complicated.
He still struggles with feelings of inadequacy but believes that he can work through these feelings by focusing on graduating his other courses and becoming a Starfleet Officer without additional counseling, seemingly in a much better place today than before. I hope he's right but I recommended he seek out further sessions when he graduates and is assigned a permanent station. I have no doubt Tarkin will do quite well in his final exams.
