Irina had an extremely close friendship with Dimitri Popov, a neighbor boy in her apartment complex growing up.  The two were inseparable and were closer than siblings all through their childhoods.  Out of school they both enlisted in the marines together and were only separated when Irina was hand-picked for a long-term exploration mission on the USS Columbia.  Dimitri is the father of Irina's daughter Katya.  He died of old age waiting for Irina return.
