Gema Maria Alken is the youngest of three children of Thomas and Maria Alken. Gema’s father, Thomas Alken, started out as a merchant marine sailor on interplanetary and intersystem merchant spaceships, and rose to become a Captain, then partner in a freight company that operated merchant spaceships throughout the Federation. Gema and her siblings spent most of their childhood in Charleston, South Carolina, Terra, which was the headquarters of the freight line company, but they also had the experience of living on other planets. Thus, Gema was, from her earliest years, acquainted with the expanse of Outer Space and with all the varied cultures and ethnic groups that are encompassed in the Federation. When Gema was about ready for college, she decided she would like to be in the mental health field for a career. She had a paternal uncle who was in Starfleet, and he steered her to the idea of becoming a Counselor in Starfleet. It was an idea that didn’t sit well with her parents, but they eventually came around, and Gema entered Starfleet Academy at age nineteen. It turned out that Gema had exactly the right type of personality to be a Counselor. She did well in her major courses and in most of her core curriculum, although she got tutoring for the science courses. Gema got along well with her fellow Cadets and made some close friendships. She even had a couple of discreet flings, but nothing serious. She was duly graduated from the Academy and assigned to UFOP 118 for her finals. Aside from her interest in her field, Gema has interests in history, archaeology and art. She also took viola lessons and hopes to continue them after successfully passing her finals.
