Ben’s interest in operations and communications came from helping out his folks at work during the school holidays: watching his mum managing properties, and listening to his dad sort out operations and logistics was all like a big jigsaw puzzle to Ben; indeed, Ben’s favourite thing in those years was to try and find a work around or solution before his folks did. As a teenager, Ben began to take on mini-projects. One summer he helped plan the logistics for delivering paints, light fittings and electricals to a portfolio of properties that were undergoing a renovation, developing Ben’s resource management and deployment skills. As part of this Ben got to pilot one of the shuttles (under supervision) and oversee the cargo exchange. The following summer Ben had a paid internship, again planning and executing logistics, but this time Ben also ‘captained’ his own shuttle. It was here that Ben’s interest of all things operations was fused together with comms and navigation! As school graduation approached Ben could had pursued the academic path or taken up a job at either of his parents’ companies – especially given the experience from his summer placements. However, the corporate world didn’t appeal to Ben: too much politics, greed and no real ‘end-game’ – what was it all for, what had his parents really achieved? On the other hand, Ben had never thought about Star Fleet – it was for ‘Star Fleet’ families, Doctors, Scientists or Hot Shot Pilots. Fortunately, Ben’s best friend at school (Troy) had signed up for a Star Fleet recruitment event, and Ben agreed to tag along for moral support. Listening to the Lieutenant describe their experience and the Star Fleet ideals that motivated him every day piqued Ben’s interest, and so Troy and Ben attended a further recruitment event which aimed to explain more about the duty posts and specialisms. On the night, by fluke, Ben heard an Ensign speak about their role as an HCO officer – finally everything clicked; there was a Ben saw there was a role in Star Fleet for him and his passion for comms, operations management and even his penchant for shuttle nav. Star Fleet was Ben’s ticket to travel, feed his passions and work towards something bigger and more important than himself than he ever had done before – or perhaps would.
