Growing up as an only child, Akoni was only used to having friend-to-friend relationships with other students in her classes. On a family visit to Vulcan, she met Selar, a young Vulcan who became her first true friend despite the cultural difference. Selar's parents, close friends of Albanos and Gaiana Soriano, had been part of the Vulcan Science Academy, inspiring Selar to pursue the sciences himself. Over the course of two Vulcan weeks, they became close friends, encouraging Selar to open up and talk more about his knowledge and interest in engineering and astronomy with her, enhancing Akoni's own interest in science as well.
