In 2375, while at Utopia Planitia, he met {{n|Quinn|Reynolds}}, a teenage wunderkind whom he was not particularly fond of due to her young age and tendency to throw out wild ideas and outrageous suggestions to engineering problems. He felt such tendencies reflected her immaturity and lack of humility, but his colleague Esteban Sanchez saw potential in Reynolds, taking the girl under his wing to reign in some of her more outlandish thinking and teach her to have a sense of practicality when it came to engineering. Years later, Montanez admitted that Sanchez had been right about Reynolds, though he still held a somewhat cool reception to her.
