Personal Background

Raissa was born near Leech Lake near the Ojibwe Reservation in North America.. She is a direct descendant of several Native American tribes, notably Ojibwe and Lakota. Her great, great grandmother (paternal) developed an interest in llamas and started the business of raising them.

Raissa and her elder twin brothers were raised in an environment that combined living in harmony with nature and the the sophistication of modern technology. Her upbringing was steeped in the traditions of her ancestors both paternal and maternal. Of the three Moonsong siblings, Raissa showed the natural aptitude skill for the native traditions of healing and herbalism along with a skill in dealing the ill and aged.

Her grandfather, David began training her at a young age in the tribe traditions. Her betazoid heritage inherited from her maternal grandmother, Tianna, gave her low level empathic ability she was able to include in her training. It was with her grandmother's help she was able to learn how to use her empathy effectively when dealing with others.

At age 17, Raissa began her medical training to be a doctor with the intention to return home to be a doctor there. But during her second semester, she worked in a recovery center helping to care for Starfleet who had to undergo long periods of therapy. She enjoyed learning from these men and women about their careers. In particular an officer who had retired and was happy to tell Raissa stories of his 'adventures'.

In time she found she was no longer satisfied remaining on Earth and decided to apply to Starfleet Academy at the end of her second term in college. Her decision came as a surprise to her family but they chose to be supportive of her desire to see more than their world could offer. Her fiance at the time, a fellow medical student, did not support her decision and the engagement ended soon after.

At the Academy, due to her aptitudes, Raissa changed her major from medicine to psychology. Her first four years at Starfleet Academy included getting her degree in psychology and because of her linguistic aptitude, she began learning more languages An additional two years were spent at Starfleet Medical perfecting her skills and learning new ones as it related to other species.

Raissa thrived in the Academy environment. She developed a large number of friends and was very social, able to get along with many of her fellow students. While not exceptional in her studies, she managed to remain firmly in the center of the top third of her class.

Personality Profile

Raissa gives her patients the impression of being calm and in control. Her instinct is to always help others and she tends to suppress her own needs and insecurities when helping others. She is a deeply loyal friend and will go to almost any length to protect those she cares about. At heart she doesn't think she is anything special and but she will do anything in her power to make sure others know their value.
