DISCOVERING THE BEYOND WITH THE LIKE MINDED

From the first moment I encountered Star Trek, its captivating blend of futuristic vision and thought-provoking narratives resonated deeply with me. The series not only entertained, but it also pushed the boundaries of what is possible, challenging us to imagine a future where humanity has conquered interstellar travel and harnessed the power of science to create a better world.

What drew me to this PBEM group is the unique opportunity it provides to actively participate in shaping the Star Trek universe. Through collaborative storytelling, we collectively weave intricate narratives that explore the uncharted territories of space, encounter alien species, and grapple with ethical dilemmas. It is through this creative process that we bring our characters to life and contribute to the ever-expanding tapestry of Star Trek adventures. However, what truly drives me is the exploration of theoretical technologies within the Star Trek universe. I am captivated by the ingenious inventions and concepts that underpin the series, ranging from warp drive and transporters to holodecks and replicators. By delving into the theoretical foundations of these technologies, I aim to bring a sense of scientific plausibility to our stories, while also expanding my own understanding of the possibilities that lie beyond our current scientific boundaries.

In joining SB118, I have found a community of like-minded individuals who share my passion for Star Trek and the boundless realm of imagination it offers. Together, we embark on thrilling adventures, blending the spirit of exploration with our love for the series, and crafting narratives that honor the legacy of Star Trek while pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

	The Genesis Award 240007.03	I’m honored to present the Genesis Award for 2023 to Erik, who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and notable improvement in his simming skills over the past six months. Since joining back in November, Erik has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to personal growth and development as a simmer. Erik's willingness to learn, and his proactive approach to enhancing his simming abilities, has been commendable. His genuine engagement and receptiveness to advice have been instrumental in his continuous improvement. Erik's remarkable progress serves as an inspiration to his fellow simmers, and his commitment to self-improvement has undoubtedly elevated the overall quality of simming on ‘Oumuamua. Congratulations, Erik, on the well-deserved Genesis Award!
	The Q Award 240106.30	Awarded to a simmer who keeps their team guessing with unexpected, clever plot twists throughout the year. Though they may be sudden, unexpected, and even dramatic changes in direction, the twists must be realistic and sensible. The twists should never happen in such a way that people feel misled, fooled, or embarrassed. Great narrative twists always increase, not decrease, other simmer’s participation in the story. It's been a real pleasure to watch Erik move up the ranks to Toxin's current position of chief of ops. He's been able to facilitate an extraordinary number of opportunities for those he sims with (both directly and indirectly, IC and OOC), whether that's in terms of providing plot hooks and twists in dialogue, or providing a deep sandbox in which we can all play. To that last, I'm thinking specifically of the work that Erik's done to build out the OEB in Canva (which, of course, isn't the only full deck plan we have -- you folks are amazing!), which never fails to stimulate my feeling of what's possible and encourages me (and, I hope, everyone!) to introduce the next new element to the story. Erik, thank you for all you do!
	1-year Member 240106.30	Length of Service Awards are presented to members who have been continuously active for at least a year. We've also got tiers for three, five, ten, fifteen, twenty, and yes, even twenty-five years of continuous service. It's a prestigious road and we celebrate those who travel it. We've got some serious milestones to celebrate this year, folks! We've got numerous players who have reached long service achievements and many newcomers with their first-year awards -- and in between, veterans with their three and five-year badges. Let's give a big round of applause to all these officers who have made our community shine bright for so long. 	Voyager Medallion 240106.30	Awarded to Operations officers who have shown great skill in keeping a starship in working order despite near-impossible circumstances. The officers receiving this award have advanced the field of Operations, have acted as the liaison between the Command, Science, and Engineering departments, and are technically proficient in operations maintenance, making sure duty rosters, provisions, gear, and even recreation time are available... no matter what. Toxin Arlill - USS Octavia E. Butler Presented by - Lia Rouiancet From the moment Erik stepped into the role of Toxin Arlill, he has pushed forward what it means to be an operations officer in the 118 fleet. His dedication to his craft is evident in his sims, in which he showcases not just Arlill’s technical prowess, but also provides a refreshing sense of humor that brings life to the often complex world of starship operations. Erik's impact extends beyond his individual contributions. He has elevated the ops department to new heights, transforming it into a robust, collaborative, and integral part of our storytelling. It’s telling that the first specific location on the OEB to receive its own wiki page (outside of the bridge, that is) was the operations center! He's an operations powerhouse both in and out of character. Even before the ship changeover, the detailed 3D renderings of the ops center on the ‘Oumuamua combined with the strong simming he engaged in brought the department to life in a way I haven’t seen before in ops. Since then, he’s, just for example, created a full deck-by-deck room plan for the OEB in Canva – and to say this goes above and beyond just doesn’t do his work justice! What really sets Erik apart, though, is his generosity. Erik embodies the spirit of collaboration and community that defines 118, and his cooperative style and friendly demeanor will make him an excellent mentor in the months to come. His contributions have not only enriched his fellow simmers’ experience but have also set a new standard for what an operations officer can be. His creativity, dedication, and camaraderie make him an incredibly deserving recipient of the Voyager Medallion. Congratulations!
