Nathan was born in Big Fork, Montana to Jennifer and Patrick Richards. Nathan grew up loving the outdoors, spending most of his time amongst the trees and rocks of the Glacier National Forest, with which his family was responsible for maintaining and protecting. While his parents hadn't been members of Starfleet, Nathan had grown up hearing stories from other family members about their lives among the stars and it spurred his imagination. He began to dream of a life among the stars, aboard a starship, searching for new life and technology. From then on, Nathan knew he wanted to join Starfleet.

It would have been an understatement to say that Nathan was excited when he was accepted into Starfleet Academy. His major was of course selected as Engineering with a specialty in propulsion, and his minor settled into Helm and Ops.
