Personal History

Mei'konda was born on Terra Nova, Earth's first colony, established originally in the late 21st century. Despite several long term setbacks involving meteor impacts, the colony site was eventually cleansed enough for normal colonization efforts to continue, and Mei'konda's parents met each other in their work at nature preserves that were once irradiated, resulting in some very interesting divergent flora and fauna species.

2367 was an eventful, and in part, a devastating year for the Federation, a very noteable event being the first Borg attack on Earth, and the Battle of Wolf 359. Mei'konda's father was a science officer on board the USS Yamaguchi, an Ambassador class starship that participated in the battle. He was killed in battle, along with the rest of the ship's crew, at which time Vry'shra was pregnant with their son on Terra Nova. Mei'konda was raised with stories of his father's heroism, which played a large part in his fascination with Starfleet and his intention to join. While his mother wasn't pleased, she told him that his father would be proud of his decision.

As a child and then a teenager, Mei'konda developed an interest in almost anything that could move fast. He played soccer with the human children, and applied himself seriously to his studies, goal of entering Starfleet academy always in mind. As a Caitian raised primarily among humans on Terra Nova, he tends to display more human mannerisms than others of his species, and keeping with his mother's advice, he did his best to translate his interest in speed and engines into something applicable in Starfleet, conn operations.

Mei'konda manged to squeak past the Academy entrance exams and secure a place at San Francisco. While there, the cheerful young Caitian made friends easily, even if he didn't excel in his studies - he often struggled with the more theoretical and less practical of his coursework, though he did have a natural feel for the helm. In his third year of the Academy, his grades began to slip as he found himself overwhelmed by the increasingly difficult load of classwork, and he was nearly held back. But a human instructor at the Academy, Commander Jason Brandt, offered Mei'konda some timely advice that allowed him to turn it all around, and he had placed at 20th in his class just before embarking on his training cruise.

First Assignment

In 2390, Mei'konda was assigned to the USS Mercury, a science vessel stationed in the Menthar Corridor. In the first hours of his time aboard ship, Mei'konda witnessed a majority of the senior staff preparing to leave on an unknown mission, leaving the Mercury without the bulk of her command staff. This complicated the situation when the Mercury received a distress call from the nearby star system JB-437.

Upon arriving in the JB-437 system, Mei'konda navigated Mercury toward the system's single gas giant, only to find the ship trapped in a tractor beam-like energy field and drawn ever closer to the gas giant - which also housed another starship, the long-lost USS Saratoga. On board the old Constitution class ship, they located a single survivor - a Lieutenant Jenna D'Soni. They were able to bring the formerly hibernating Lieutenant back to the Mercury with them. Upon their return, the Mercury used the detonation of Saratoga in the gas giant's atmosphere to ride its shockwave out of range of the tractor beam.

Upon returning to Deep Space 10, Mei'konda was given a promotion to Lieutenant, JG for his actions on this mission.

Continuing Voyages

As his tour of duty aboard the Mercury continued, Mei'konda was groomed to take a larger role in the Operations department, though his primary duties remained as that of a helmsman. Despite still being young, the Caitian officer found that excitement didn't suit him quite as well as the simple pleasures of day to day life aboard a Starship, and the satisfaction he found in performing more routine duties exceptionally.

For the Operations department, a mission to the Beta Scuti system turned a little more exciting than he'd have preferred when a tramp freighter named Renegade Trader was encountered, investigating ancient Menthar ruins illegally. With as-of-then electromagnetic interference occasionally disrupting the systems of both the Mercury and the freighter, attempts to keep the Trader's orbit from degrading failed, and Mei'konda was forced to keep the Mercury in close range so that passengers and crew could be beamed off before the ship disintegrated. Mei'konda didn't feel as though the destruction of the Renegade Trader was a personal failure, but he did take it upon himself to begin serious study on tractor beam operations to minimize the chances of such an event reoccurring.

As the Mercury made her month-long trip back to Deep Space Ten, personnel changes on board the Mercury caused Captain Aron Kells to promote Mei'konda early to full Lieutenant, and Chief of Operations on board the Mercury.
