As most J'naii do not associate with a masculine or feminine (male/female) gender identity, many prefer the use of gender-neutral pronouns for themselves.
The majority of J'naii are ungendered or 'angrogynous' and do not experience or express any gender identity. As such, many prefer the use of gender-neutral pronouns.


It should be noted that there are a large population of J'naii who do experience gender - the below guide is for Ensign Kivik's preferences only.
While 'They' is a commonly-used gender-neutral pronoun within the Federation (and most J'naii would accept its use for themselves), when referring to an individual J'naii, it is considered polite to use the alternative outlined below.

In 2399, Kivik was asked to take on the role of Acting Chief Science Officer in [[Zhanyt Lafizatar]]'s absence by nir former Captain, Roshanara Rahman - now Captain of the [[USS Kitty Hawk]]. Accepting the position eagerly, Kivik quickly began to realize that ne wanted to serve under Rahman aboard the Kitty Hawk more permanently. A few months later, ne requested consideration for the role and received an immediate field promotion from Rahman to the rank of Lieutenant, along with the posting of Chief Science Officer.
