Background
Born into conflict Jak Klyes never knew peace for the first 14 years of his life. Due to poor sanitation his mother died after giving birth to him and his father was already dead, a casualty of the ongoing war between Rutia IV’s warring factions.
Raised by his grandmother in a slum on the edge of one of the Rutia IV’s major cities Jak spent most of his early childhood digging for scrap to trade for food. At the age of eight his grandmother died of malnutrition and Jak was taken in by a roving band of street children. With the group he engaged in petty crimes in order to stay alive but he also found he had an aptitude for repairing things. At the age of ten he was caught by a local militia trying to steal food. Luckily he managed to impress the militia by fixing their water purifier and instead of killing him they put him to work fixing their rundown machinery.
Over the next three years he honed his repair skills and was taught to read, write and do basic maths by some of the kinder militia members. Although a relatively more stable time in his life it was still filled with constant moving around and fierce battles. By thirteen he had killed his first person and that act sent him into a depressive tailspin. It was then he decided he needed to escape Rutia IV and he spent the next year figuring out how to bypass the sensors in a high security shuttle depot. The break in was successful and he stowed away on a Lissepian trade ship and when it landed on its next planet Jak found himself in Federation space.
Found wandering a Melthusian colony Jak was quickly picked up and sent to the nearest Federation embassy. When he told his story to the Federation officers it was decided that sending him back to Rutia IV would be nothing more than a death sentence. For that reason, and his young age, he was given Federation citizenship. He took the Federation aptitude tests and although he scored low on many basic skills he did score high on many of the technical parts and so he was offered a spot at the Starfleet Technical Training School.
Grateful for not being sent back to Rutia IV Jak put everything he had into his courses at the Technical School. He found himself having to work extra hard in courses many of his peers at the school found easy and lacking in many social skills he found his first few years there very difficult. Still, with hard work and dogged determination Jak managed to graduate and even make some friends along the way. When he was given the rank of Crewman Third Class and a place on the USS Eagle Jak was overcome with joy, an emotion he had rarely felt in his life, and as he stepped on board his first posting he promised he would make everyone who ever believed in him proud.
