History:

A race of hardy space pioneers, the Bardeezans are traders, pilots, couriers and even smugglers. They have a squat appearance and a tanned complexion, whilst their hearty manner make them great drinking companions and trusted friends - so long as you don't cross them in business.

For decades, the Bardeezan people have suffered constant raids from their more powerful neighbours, the Dorfmen of Byzatium, with many Bardeezans being taken as slave labour to work for the Dorfmen. Consequently, the Bardeezan rulers have appealed to the Federation and other neighbouring systems for help fighting off Dorfmen piracy. However, matters are complicated politically as the nominal Dorfmen government on Byzatium is also allied to the Federation too, and blames the slave trade on rogues, brigands and privateers. The main assistance sent to the Bardeezans has come from the powerful Pythrons who have sent equipment, supplies and instructors to boost the Bardeezans' defences. This makes Bardeez a firm ally of Pythro V, but some suspect that the Pythrons are more interested in extending their own influence in the region rather than from any altruism towards the Bardeezans. Events came to a head after the assassination of a leading General of the Pythron High Command was traced back to Byzallian Dorfmen terrorists. This precipitated a large expeditionary force being sent from Pythro V to link up with the Bardeezans, leading to The Bardeezan War of 2388.

Culture:

A quirk of their culture is that everyone and place on Bardeez is numbered, so all proper nouns are a phonetic pronounciation of the first nine numbers. For example, Landinam Losifar is 1-5-6-4.

1 – Landi
2 – Hug
3 – Onih
4 – Ifar
5 – Nam
6 – Los
7 – Fair
8 – Gogi
9 – Gobo

Physiology:

They are also very long lived, not reaching maturity until their 50s, and living to about 200 years, baring accidents.

References:

NB: Bardeezan merchant ships have traversed the Bajoran wormhole into the Gamma Quadrant. One such ship left Deep Space Nine the night Dukat was kidnapped by the Maquis. As one of only two to do so, suspicion quickly shifted to the other ship, a Galdador freighter.
