Protocol Parallax (also Parallax Protocol) is a classified operational directive issued by the Starfleet Command concerning Starfleet interaction with the parallel universe known as the Mirror universe. In force at least by 2400, it could be automatically triggered by the ship or station computer upon registrating signs indicating the presence of Mirror universe individuals. The automated message to the ship or station command staff includes instructions and guidelines to executing the Protocol as well as information conserning the Mirror universe that would be otherwise classified.[1][2][3]

Activation and Contents

When a Starfleet ship or station computer encounters signs that could indicate the presence of Mirror universe individuals, it assesses the findings. Such indicators could be tricorder and transporter log analysis that show quantum signature desynchronization.[2][4] Upon activation, the computer will inform the commanding officer or other highest Starfleet representative present by sending a priority one automated alert and, after the authorization code is entered, showing the summary of the Protocol contents.[1] An automated priority one message would also be sent to the Starfleet Command.[2]

The Protocol requires the Commanding officer to detect, isolate and investigate the potential Mirror universe individuals and gives instructions to do so.[1] The Protocol does not authorize breaching the Prime Directive, but does permit necessary steps to rescue Prime universe individuals from the Mirror universe.[5] The Protocol requires the Starfleet crew to keep interaction and interference to the Mirror universe minimal, requiring for example to destroy any traces of Starfleet that cannot be otherwise removed from the Mirror universe.[6][7]

The Protocol Documentation, opened to the Commanding officer after activation, contains reports on Mirror universe history and the known crossings to or from the Mirror universe. While the existance of the Mirror universe is a common rumour, the documentation includes information that is otherwise classified. The documentation describes, among others, Captain James T. Kirk's visit in the Mirror universe, the fall of the Terran Empire after the leadership of Emperor Spock, rise of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance and the multiple crossings on the Deep Space 9. In general, much is however not known about the Mirror universe and especially its fringe areas.[3][5]

The Commanding officer may not share the Protocol information except to entrusted, authorized, and relevant personnel. Some civilians, such as high-ranking Federation Diplomatic Corps officials have the required clearances.[1][2]
