SIM:Nicholotti (Deron) Life Support
((Transporter Room 1))
::Eliaan breathed a sigh of relief when he rematerialised on the transporter pad. His meeting with King Qalan had been productive and he was confident that the illnesses blighting the planet would soon stop. He was already writing a paperin his head for the Federation Medical Journal , his father would be so pleased.::
::Resisting the temptation for a hot meal and a sonic shower for now, he headed into a turbolift and travelled down the two decks to sickbay.::
((Sickbay))
::As he entered, Kaedyn Tann approached him.::
Tann: Doctor, the medical kits you requested have been transported down the planet’s surface.
Deron: Excellent, thank you. How have things been up here?
::There was a sense of tension between the two men following the argument in the minutes before Eliaan had left for the away mission. While they both were keen to pretend that it hadn’t happened, the memory of it filled the silent spaces between their words.::
Tann: Quiet... certainly quieter than on the planet. I heard that a marine had been killed and Lt Reznov had been confined to the brig.
::The Betazoid frowned.::
Deron: I didn’t hear anything about that...
::Just then, they were interrupted by a voice filtering over the comm. system and Ensign MacKenna informed them of an incoming medical emergency. The two men exchanged confused, and slightly panicked, looks.::
::Moments later, Lt Nicholotti materialised onto the surgical biobed, the weapon that had caused her injuries still jutting horrifically from her chest. She was unconscious, her face was pale and she was covered with her own blood. At the sight of her, Eliaan felt himself reel slightly and the all the breath in his chest vanish.::
Deron: By the four deities!
::The two men ran over to the surgical biobed, Kaedyn activated the sensor cluster above them. The surgical support frame from the sides of the biobed slid up and joined over the body of the injured marine.::
Tann: What the hell happened down there?
::Eliaan looked up at the Trill, the shock of what had happened less than half an hour after he had left the planet clearly evident in his eyes.::
Deron: I have no idea; everything was fine when I left.
::Kaedyn looked down at the readings on the biofunction monitor.::
Tann: B.P. is 90/50, PO2 is 68, pulse 130bpm
Deron: Her right lung has collapsed and the weapon has penetrated her heart. The aorta is intact, but she’s got severe internal bleeding. She’ll need immediate surgery.
Tann: Yes, doctor.
::Kaedyn called over the surgical nurse and as the two nurses began to prepare for surgery, Eliaan leaned down and spoke gently to the young marine, remembering when they both arrived on the ship together for their first assignments following their final cadet training mission together. It felt like only yesterday.::
Deron: Kali, can you hear me? It’s Eliaan. You’ve been stabbed in the chest but you’re going to be alright, just hang in there for me. Okay? I’m going to help you; you just have to keep fighting like I know you can.
::In silence, Kaedyn helped him into the red surgical gown and cap. The Trill reached out and gripped his forearm, giving it a reassuring squeeze.::
Tann: Are you okay?
::Eliaan looked down at his patient, overwhelmed with guilt that he had escaped a similar fate and anger at whoever had done this to his friend.::
Deron: I’m fine. ::He paused, his jaw clenched:: Do me a favour, find out what happened.
Tann: Understood.
::Kaedyn stepped out of the surgical bay, the surgical nurse activated the sterile field around the biobed and Eliaan began operating.::
Turner: =/\= Bridge to Nurse Tann =/\=
Tann: =/\= Tann here, Go ahead =/\=
Turner: =/\= I didn't want to disturb the doctors, but what's the condition of Lieutenant Nicholotti? =/\=
Tann: =/\= She’s been stabbed in the chest; the knife has penetrated her heart, her lung has collapsed and she’s bleeding internally. She’s currently in surgery =/\=
Turner: =/\= Alright, keep me posted. =/\=
Tann: =/\= Understood, sickbay out. =/\=
::As the comm. channel to Commander Turner was severed, more injured marines were transported into sickbay. One carried the limp body of his team mate; another supported a fourth marine whose shoulder and arm were covered in blood.::
Jones: Help him; he took a disruptor blast to the chest.
Tann: Place him on the biobed.
::Kaedyn examined the biofunction monitor.::
Tann: I’m sorry, he’s dead.
::Silence filled the air as the three marines exchanged looks.::
Tann: ::quietly:: What happened down there?
Jones: Hirogen. Ambushed us.
Tann: Hirogen?! How is that even possible?
Jones: I don’t know but he hit the L-T pretty hard. ::The marine looked over at the surgical bay, where Eliaan was working on Nicholotti:: is she going to be okay?
::Kaedyn followed the marine’s gaze at the injured young woman and the medics fighting to save her life.::
Tann: I think so. I just hope we don’t get any more casualties on this. ::He stared for a moment, before shaking himself out of his dream and turning his attention to the other injured marin:: Come on; let me fix that shoulder for you.
