History

  • Childhood

Keneth was born on Stardate 237402.18 at the Chicago Medical Center.

His father, David, was a researcher at the University of Chicago. His mother was a botanist from Canada. Somehow, his parents claimed, it had been an instant match.

From a young age, he had displayed a lot of interest in mathematics and his father had correspondingly taught him logical reasoning too – an experiment that failed miserably on his sister. But Keneth did learn – and that had become a defining trait for him – he could be incredibly rational and reason anything out. Or at least so he thought.

When he was three, the family moved to Mumbai, partially at his mother’s insistence and partially because his father had received a research opportunity there. It was there that Keneth realized that the majority of Earth really was identical, global culture was a real thing and that he would never find real diversity on Earth. It had been sacrificed for peace. Later, at twelve, they moved back to Chicago.

As he moved through high school, he grew bored of staring at the stars from a distance, calculating their lives to 128-bit triple point accuracy. He wanted to be near them, to feel the wonder of a discovery. He wanted to explore and a planet was too constraining. He wanted to meet people who were actually different. So he applied to Starfleet.

His family did not trust this to work – Starfleet had so low an acceptance rate it may as well be zero. He should just enlist they said, or better yet, study on planet – maybe join his father? Keneth almost started believing it. Then he was accepted. He had only one disappointment – he had wanted science, but he got engineering. He decided against switching majors later and instead minored in science.

  • Academy Years

The one notable feature of his academy time is his insistence on performing research. This lead to him forming a close relationship with Doctor Quinell Winslett, a propulsion researcher and one of his professors. He co-published a paper in his second year with the professor regarding transwarp fields, which began his love for propulsion. He later published papers on computation and a single study on navigational algorithms during a summer internship at the Daystrom Institute. His final year he published his thesis and a seemingly widely acclaimed paper on the effectiveness of key lime pie as ship based weaponry using transporter fields.

He graduated on stardate 239705.25 and was posted to the USS Juneau upon the completion of his training cruise on 239706.01.

  • Prologue, USS Arrow

Keneth's first mission went off to an interesting start. He was initially assigned to the USS Juneau, to which he reported right out of the academy. After some introductions, he began work in engineering, helping with efforts to secure the bio-neural gelpacks onboard from damage due to Eichner radiation they were going to encounter.

Very quickly, however, before any significant discussion took place, he was called down to the shuttlebay to join the away team heading to investigate and regain control of the USS Arrow. It was here that he first met many of his future crewmates aboard the shuttle on the way to the derelict ship.

As they arrived at the vessel, they quickly divided into two teams - one heading down to engineering and the other up to the bridge. He was assigned to the brdge team, headed by Lieutenant Commander Collins. As they embarked, they had to rapidly replan as they encountered several members of the species entitled 'The People'. Some quick thinking led Kenth t conclude that the weak point on their armour was a strip of black terminals along the sides of their suits. Using this information, the officers subdued the first creature. Unfortunately, they spent too much power in the process, leaving Keneth no choice but to fire on the nearest plasma conduit, ionizing the whole compartment in an explosion of sorts, thus incapacitating the second intruder.

The immediate aftermath of this was a nervous breakdown, unable to handle the emotions of terror and confusion that he'd just received. After being calmed down by Commander Collins, the team carried on to the bridge. Later he would feel quite silly about the way he reacted. As they entered the bridge and fortified their position, a string of repairs led to a new problem cropping up - thermal overload. Quick work by Warrant Office Kingsley averted death by using the heat to blow up a missile instead.

As the Arrow set off towards Starbase 821, Keneth and Ensign Sasaki were assigned to get the warp drive back online and fix the laundry list of issues aboard. Though sleep deprived, he began work, with a quick patch bringing the warp engines back online. But shortly after, Ensign Sasaki noticed a small bug-like device skittering around in engineering. A brief operation by Keneth and two crewmen succeeded in capturing the creatures.

In the course of investigation, he plugged the device into the computer to see what he could glean. However, having followed improper procedure, he accidently exposed the device to the computer core, resulting in it sending random commands to the machine. This led to the ship accelerating rapidly to hugh warp factors, something unsustainable for the ship's current state.

Rapidly realizing what had happened, Keneth unplugged the device. However this action effectively 'killed' it leaving him feeling great remorse at what had occurred. Though he later admitted that the creature was technically an enemy combatant at that point in time, he maintains that it was his negligence that caused the whole fiasco, from the death of the creature to the near-destruction of the ship from the sudden acceleration. It has made him far more cautious of what he did with alien hardware, especially when the consequences were entirely unknown.

Soon after arriving at Starbase 821, he had a conversation with Commander Shayne. In it, he talked about his past on Earth, his motivations at the academy and reasoned through how his expectations and desires had changed because of the recent ordeal. He ended up firming up his goals and taking a definitive stance that he wanted to work towards command, though he was still unsure of where the path would take him. Re-enforced by a desire to move on, improve himself and get over his lingering guilt from the death of the arachnid creature, he entered his new permanent posting aboard the Arrow with greater gusto as the ship moved in to the Alpha Isles preparing to investigate the sudden appearance of millions of distress signals and deal with the implications of such a mystery.
