Most shuttles are short-range vessels, possessing only impulse drive or limited warp capability. The use of shuttlecraft is common for most spacefaring civilizations, especially for situations where the transporter cannot be used for landings, or where such technology does not yet exist. Starfleet designates shuttlecraft into two classes: Class 1 Shuttlecraft: Also known as shuttlepods., these smaller shuttlecraft lack warp capability. Class 2 Shuttlecraft: Larger shuttles capable of warp travel and extended mission duration. A number of specialized craft such as workbees, captain's yachts, aeroshuttles, and wave riders are also employed in the fleet.
