Javier Montanez is a 73-year-old Human engineer assigned to Starfleet R&D in Tokyo, Earth. He previously served as chief engineer of the USS Tempest and worked at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in the late 2370s, participating in the Emissary class project amongst others. In 2375, while at Utopia Planitia, he met Quinn Reynolds, a teenage wunderkind whom he was not particularly fond of due to her young age and tendency to throw out wild ideas and outrageous suggestions to engineering problems. He felt such tendencies reflected her immaturity, but his colleague Esteban Sanchez saw potential in Reynolds, taking the girl under his wing to reign in some of her more outlandish thinking and teach her to have a sense of practicality when it came to engineering. MannerA decorated veteran of Starfleet Engineering, Montanez has helped train and develop a generation of Starfleet officers, including Cassandra Egan Manno and Roshanara Rahman. Beneath his gruff demeanor is an intense loyalty to his fellow engineers and unwavering support for those young officers he feels have passion—not just intellectual potential—and above all else have demonstrated a solid work ethic to truly earn their place in the service.
