It is important to note that the Ishkarian home world has not actually been a planet for over two thousand years. The entire Ishkarian system is comprised of planetary fragments, referred to as Shards, many of which have retained a combined atmosphere. The Shards range is size from a few kilometers up to tens of thousands of kilometers. Some of the more notable Shards are Shard Prime -- the commerce and transportation hub of the Ishkarian system, Shard Thetreca, a well-traveled tourist destination, and Shard Czerka, an untamed wilderness where the Search and Rescue team of the USS Drake conducted a training mission.
