Background

Applied to Starfleet Academy at age 16, but did not have sufficient scores to become an officer at that time. Became an enlisted non-commissioned crewman instead. Served onboard Jupiter Station for nearly 20 years. Under recommendation of his CO reapplied to the Academy, to become an officer, despite being in his mid-late thirties.
