Sylvie was born on Mars to a ship worker and a doctor. She was recognized as a quick learner early on, so she tended to do well in her studies. After graduating from school, she took a gap year before applying to Starfleet Academy, choosing to use that time to take a lengthy vacation on Earth before studying for Academy entry exams. She had a difficult start to her studies there but hit her stride once she reoriented her focus from the mechanical to the medical fields.
