Real Life information
I am 51 years of age, I work with people with disabilities, I have been working in that field since 1989. Probably the job that I have enjoyed the most in my experience was coaching boys/girls basketball for 8 years. They were just so much fun to be around. Not that I was ever a good player myself, it was a joy to work with them. I coached at Erie East H.S. (Warriors)4 years(boys), Fairview(Tigers) H.S.(girls) (2 years) and Corry(Beavers) H.S. (2 years). I have an associate’s degree in Computer Technology, and a B.A. in General Business. I am have been married for the past 12 years.
I have a small collection of historic firearms from World War I to World War II. I enjoy getting them, cleaning them and then taking them out the firing range.
We have a lot of pets in the house. I have been a volunteer for the National Park Service since 2000. I am currently on the Cannon Crew at Fort Pulaski in the state of Georgia in the United States.
I have been a fan of Star Trek since I was about 12 years old. I have been an active board gamer since about that same time. I have probably 100+ games. I love competition, sports, games, etc. I love military history, and have co written two on line articles on the subject. My favorite series is DS9, The original ST, Enterprise, STNV, and Voyager. I have seen all the movies of course. I liked the last one, but I was against the total rewrite of Star Trek history. I have played a lot of text based games on the internet but became frustrated with the games ending usually within 6 months due to lack of participation.
How you came to UFOP: SB118
I came to SB118, by an search of PBEM games on the internet. I liked Star Trek, but I realized that I would have work on the writing skills. I joined and after a bit of prodding by the FO, I got hooked. It was probably a good fit. We had recently moved, and away from my gamming group, and needed my 'fix'of gaming. I still do some military board gaming but SB118, now covers the vast majority of my gaming time.
Probably the biggest thing that drew me to ST118 that I knew that if I put the time in the game, that the game would still be there. I figured 18 years was a pretty good track record.
History
- Where were you first placed? What was it like starting to sim on your vessel?
I have always been on the USS Aurora/USS Avandar. I was assigned as a tactical officer on the Aurora and then moved with the rest of the crew to the Avandar. I took me a while to get used to the entire 'sim' speak. But I have gotten used to it and now I am one of the more active simmers on the ship. We have a good group of writers on the Avandar. There are even some characters you love to hate.
- What have been your greatest challenges in this group?
The actual writing has always been a challenge. I have never been good at grammar. I have a vivid imagination but putting it down in text is difficult. I have a couple of good writers on the Avandar that helps me at lot...
- What have been your greatest achievements in this group?
The re-write of the three Species. No doubt. That work will be looked at for many years. Hopefully new cadets will like what see and gives them fodder for many a good simm.
- What do you hope to ultimately accomplish?
I find it the ultimate escape in some respects, I love reading the Simms and writing them. I love history and have done three 'species' updates that I am very proud of. It really makes one think and I take a lot of pride in doing them. I enjoy the forums and doing wiki work. Knowing that people will be looking at my work for years to come. It also forces me to do good work that I am proud of. I am always striving to do better for myself and for the family of SB118.
- Where do you see this group in five years?
I hope we have more participates in 5 years. I certainly see myself here. I think we are a valued part of the greater STAR TREK community.
- How do you think this group has contributed to Star Trek's legacy? How has the group contributed to the internet community?
I don't know, honestly, but I know how often that SB118 comes up on Star Trek searches on the internet. I am always surprised how often I see a reference to SB118. I do feel that we are a intergal part of the internet Star Trek community.
