A race of sub-microscopic robotic life-forms that were created by the Federation. The Nanites are recognized as being sentient lifeforms on stardate 43125.8 and are granted the right to colonise a planet of their own.
Under the care of Lt. Kevin Breeman two sentient colonies of nanites called smileys have been serving aboard the USS Ronin as auxiliary AI and engineering equipment.
