Terrell was born on Earth.  His parents were well known professors.  While he did well in school, his aimlessness and the problems he caused his parents forced them to cut him out of their money, unless he changed his life.  Using his parents influence, he went to Starfleet Academy.  While there he found that he had a pretty good mind for medicine.  So after his first year he switched from tactical to medical and started earning his degree.
