Counselor is a position aboard StarFleet vessels and installations, usually held by a senior StarFleet officer with training in mental health counseling, tasked with taking care of the emotional well-being of a ship's crew and guests. The position is considered vital enough to be included in the senior staff hierarchy. Often, the ship's counselor may take dual-roles as a diplomat, advisor to the captain, or sometimes even as an emergency bridge officer.

By the 2330s, StarFleet realized that the mental health of their officers was of tantamount importance to their mission, and that crews on extended missions would benefit from counseling provided by a qualified psychologist, and sometimes psychiatrist.

As with the chief medical officer, the ship's counselor has the power to relieve other officers and crew members of duty if he or she feels that their patient is suffering from a condition that may hinder their ability to perform their duties effectively.
