They are also sometimes called Lyaarans.

"As a people we strive to tip the balance towards the light. Many would call this a futile endeavor yet still we do so. To do other would be to surrender to the dark."
a Iyaarans proverb.
The Iyaarans are a species of intelligent humanoids who have great difficulty understanding many other species. Their complete rigidity when it comes to accurate expressions of art and their seemingly illogical desire to tip the universal balance between the dark and the light further compound this problem.

History

Their history is one of almost constant war with conflicts raging all over their world. Some lasted for generations and others for only a very short time. Some covered vast regions, while others existed only is small little areas. Regardless of this all of their early records confirm this seemingly never ending series of ongoing hostilities.

Things changed approximately 1,260 years ago. At this time a small and almost obscure faction with unusual beliefs started to grow. With time they absorbed any and all those who would listen. Their radical ideas that all conflict was a result of the universes constant struggle between the values of light and dark, good and evil eventually resulted in the end of all the wars on their world.

Over the next 600 plus years they grew, prospered, advanced and developed into a unified people, one that gradually made the leap into space. Shortly after they did they encountered other species. First the ???, then the ??? and eventually the ???.

They observed as the Federation was created, watched as it grew and developed and while they were offered admission they preferred to remain as they were. This did not prevent them from assisting and at times assisting the Federation.

They eventually provided a few ships, supplies and troops to serve beside Federation forces against both the Romulans and the Klingons once they had identified these species as seeming to serve the dark side of the never ending universal conflicts between good and evil.

They supplied even more against the Dominion during the Dominion Wars and the various Borg incursions.

Government

They have an elected council of elders. This group of 30 individuals sits in a large round chamber with 60 chairs. Half of the room is white and half of the room is black. All 30 individuals sit only in the chairs on the white side. They serve for life and when one dies 30 possible candidates are selected carefully. Then the council debates their merits and votes on who the replacement will be that will fill the empty seat.

Description

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

They reproduce using a technique described as post-cellular compounding. When they are "born" from within their natal pods, they emerge as fully developed adults.

Food is ingested for basic sustenance only, so their dietary supplements are extremely bland.

When one of them becomes injured their metabolic rate slows down in order to promote healing.

Psychology

Iyaarans find humans fascinating because many of their intrinsic beliefs and practices share nothing in common with Terrans. For example, the Iyaarans are not familiar with the concept of pleasure, antagonism and love.

Religion

They believe that all life forms are a part of a greater whole but that some are negative and some are positive. That there is a never ending war going on between these two different sides, the secret is trying to pick the right side.

Mythology

They have numerous fables, tales and myths that seem to revolve around the never ending struggle between good and evil. All of them attempt to teach a lesson, to impart some germ of truth, some fragment of logic that may be useful, even illuminating.

Society

They have well-developed, logical and carefully laid out communities with plenty of infrastructure, social and recreational facilities and emergency services. People work together for the betterment of their communities and social unrest, crime and in-equality are for the most part are very rare or almost completely unknown.

Culture

While they do have a very rich and diverse history and collection of both art forms and preserved art, all of it is extremely accurate. Any and all statues look exactly like what inspired it. The same goes for pictures, paintings, tapestries, mosaics, etc, etc.

They have absolutely no understanding or grasp of any kind when it comes to any art form that fails to accurately represent the object which inspired it.

As for music, that is simply a very simplistic set of notes used to relax and ease tension, used most often to calm little children or for adults as a way to drift off to sleep.

Customs

As with most intelligent life forms they have developed a number of unique customs. However for the most part these are not an important aspect of their culture or society. In fact they tend to be merely antiquated relics, known by most but seldom ever used.

Technology

Their long term status as reliable allies to the Federation as well as their well-developed research and development system has allowed them to remain on near equal standing technologically speaking with most of the member worlds in the Federation.

Economy

Their entire trade and economic system is so completely interwoven with that of the Federation, especially those worlds within their region of space that it could almost be considered an extension of the Federations system. As a result the overall quality of life for most of their people has improved over time.

Military

They maintain a very efficient, yet small fleet of vessels. They use to maintain a much larger fleet but now that their homeworld is surrounded by Federation space they do not need to.

Their current fleet is made up of 5 heavy cruisers, 11 cruisers, 17 destroyers and 13 frigates. The frigates serve as training vessels and a reserve force. The destroyers patrol and maintain the safety of all nearby shipping lanes between their homeworld and their colonies.

Only the cruisers ever travel far from their homeworld and they do take part in Federation training exercises. In the past they have sent cruisers to assist the Federation during both the Dominion War and the Borg Invasion.

Federation Intelligence Files

While they do not seem to be interested in becoming members of the Federation they do take great effort to support and work with Federation forces for the betterment of not only themselves but the stability of their region of space.

They have 5 colonies, all within a week’s travel from their homeworld. Their military vessels seem to be continuously patrolling between them.
