Personality Traits

Friends and colleagues describe Ryan as driven, ambitious, warm and sometimes dark. He often states his point of view succinctly and can be blunt to the point of impolite with those he is uncomfortable around. Ryan is prone to having ideas, but not always considering every angle. His superior officers sometimes find it necessary to channel that energy to more useful purposes. He is meticulous and can focus too much energy on small problems to the detriment of the big picture. Ryan is the first to admit that he sometimes still wonders what he is doing with his life. He will often say, when prompted, that his goals are to do something, rather than be something. This belief often makes Ryan a rather impatient person.

Background

In 2362, Ryan King was born to Arnold and Evelyn King. Their first child and only son, he was quiet by temperament and often described as melancholy. The King family’s history on Cestus III is long and proud. They were settlers from Earth during the repopulation of Cestus III in 2271 following the first Gorn invasion. And by the time of Ryan’s birth the King family had established themselves as leaders and prominent small business owners on the colony.

Ryan was encouraged to do well by his family, but their comparative wealth meant that the young boy didn’t want for much and was challenged to do well, but never to think different. He spent those early years of his life exploring, but mainly kept to himself and spent most of his time in the company of books. Ryan cherished children’s mystery books and books on history.

Early adolescence brought much change to his life however. With the start of the Dominion War, Ryan, at age 11, soon found his young mind confronted by the dark issues that war brought: fear, famine, destruction and loss.

The war required great sacrifice from everyone. On Cestus III, rumors of Dominion invasion brought about unrest and necessitated the establishment of a citizen’s militia to ease the minds of troubled colonists about their safety. His father served the militia and told his son stories of families suffering far more than their own. Arnold King imparted to Ryan that these times were graves ones with the universe, as young Ryan knew it, at stake. The Federation stood for peace, life and hope according to Arnold King. The Dominion? The loss of everything and everyone the child held dear.

These years (2373 – 2375) shaped young Ryan King. He begged his mother to allow him to go to StarFleet rallies. These rallies exposed him to the patriotism and xenophobia of the times. He watched waves of enlisted men and women leave Cestus for service in StarFleet and he knew they were leaving to protect him. He knew then that he wanted to be like them, he wanted to protect others. He wanted to be a great person.

The year 2377 brought another change to his family. The post-war years saw a population boom throughout the Federation and on Cestus III the family of Arnold and Evelyn King welcomed a daughter, Jamie to the family, much to the irritation of the 15 year-old Ryan.

By 2380, much of Ryan’s childish spark had waned. Distracted by the concerns of early adulthood and a peacetime Federation, he finished his primary education with below average grades and joined his father in the family business on Cestus III.

However, by 2383 he soon realized he was unhappy with his life. His childhood spark came back and Ryan decided it was time to do something different. He enrolled in his local institution of higher learning and there he met and befriended his mentor.

At community college, Ryan studied letters more than he did science. He learned the stories of great people – politicians, military leaders and inventors – and then he made a choice. He applied to StarFleet Academy and in 2385, at the age of 26, Ryan was accepted.

In late 2385, Ryan left Cestus III for the first time in his life, choosing to take his Academy courses on Earth. At the Academy, Ryan was not a gifted student but he earned a respectable grade point average and settled on Security and Tactical studies. He viewed the disciplines as a proper balance of physical strength and practical intellect. And he also knew at this point that he hated mathematics.

During his time at the Academy, Ryan also began to develop a new skill that he recognized he possessed. As he grew to know his class of Cadets, he soon realized that his slightly older age and interpersonal style engendered a certain trust and respect between him and his classmates. Ryan never was the most popular Cadet, but he understood that he was well respected and liked.

On a whim during his sophomore year, Ryan decided to run for a seat in the student body legislature and won. And by his junior year, his peers in the legislature elected him Speaker of the Academy Assembly. By his senior year, Ryan decided to run for student body President and lostwith a respectable twenty-eight percent of the vote in a four-way race. Even today, the loss is still a rather sore subject for the Cadet.

Ryan has not been back to Cestus III in nearly five years. In recent months, he has taken to following the planets professional sports league, the Cestus Baseball League (CBL), as a way of staying in touch with his homeworld.
