"How can you breathe something with no taste."
a typical Yalosian question.
The Yalosian are a species who require special environmental conditions for survival as they breathe a highly acidic atmosphere. Due to this they seldom leave their world and when they do it requires them to wear special equipment.

History

They have had a peaceful history with survival being the main concern. This eternal drive to survive was the first spark that resulted in technological advancement. It was followed by more and a slow increase in their population. From the very beginning of their recorded history their has been one world government. However even with the birth of civilization the need to survive and grow was at constant odds with their environment. As a result they have developed at a slow but fairly consistent pace.

The visit by an ambassador of this species to Deep Space 9 in 2371 caused major refurbishing of his guest quarters, since his atmosphere dissolved the room carpet and it had to be replaced. Major Kira Nerys was in charge of preparing the quarters for the ambassador.

Government

Right from the start of their recorded history they have had a council of elders. Originally this was made up of a group of 5 but over time and with the increase in their population this number has repeatedly been modified and increased in order to deal with the work load. Currently they have 113 elders serving on the council

Description

They have dark purple/dark blue skin tones and their skin is thick and dense. As a result their skin is not that sensitive and is totally impervious to many corrosive elements as long as they are not concentrated. On average they stand about 4’6” to 5’2” and tend to be uncommonly slim. Their legs and arms are longer than on most humanoid species and their torso is shorter. They have no body hair of any kind.

Physiology

The most noticeable difference about them as a species is that they breath an incredibly acidic atmosphere and are unable to see red or orange in the visible spectrum. They breathe a corrosive mixture of 60% nitrogen, 10% benzene, and 30% hydrogen fluoride. They also have a thicker, denser skin that is impervious to many corrosive elements as long as they are not concentrated.

Psychology

Very rare cases have been recorded. So rare that their medical personnel have no formal training for how to deal with mental instability. Their normal procedure is to contain, observe and then isolate anyone that shows signs of mental instability. In their case isolation means relocation to an remote island in the heart of a sea that is so corrosive and acidic that nothing, not even one of them can survive being immersed into it. This sea is known as the sea of the dead.

Religion

They have no true religion. Merely a respectful regard for their elders and the ones that came before. They also celebrate numerous festivals that revolve round various elders and historical events. Most of these include specific songs and dramatic epic poems being performed for the population.

Mythology

While they do not have a true set of myths they do maintain a very strong history in relations to important events and people. These events and people are remembered in songs, art and epic dramatic poems. They have a number of songs and poems that predate their written history.

Society

They have a very casual society but one with no history of crime or violence. In fact in all their history they have only every been a few cases of either ever happening. On the whole they live and work together. Helping each other out as much as possible.

Culture

Sculptures, songs and the use of epic poems to convey ideas and keep their history alive verbally are an essential part of their society. As a result they have not imported much in the way of off world culture. The few exceptions to this has been Klingon opera and the ancient style plays of a number of various cultures.

Customs

When a citizen passes on they are carried by family and friends to the sea of the dead. Depending on the distance from the sea this can take weeks or even months. At no time can the body be placed on the ground, or the procession stop. When someone gets tired someone else takes their place. While walking the family and friends remember the deceased with stories and song.

Now days they have skimmers that work like a treadmill allowing the friends and family to walk while carrying the dead body. However the skimmer can easily turn a trip that would have taken a month into one that only takes a few days. Once they arrive at the sea the body is placed on a raft. Then it is pushed into the sea where it drifts for a time till it dissolves and sinks from sight.

Technology

They are behind the Federation but have been catching up slowly. Mostly this is due to the corrosive nature of their atmosphere that requires a whole different set of rules and working parameters. They can not even trade for alien technology as in most cases none of it will function the way it should on their home world.

Economy

For the most part they are self sufficient, however they have developed a few trade partners in order to get certain raw resources. Other than that they do not have much interest in off world goods. Most can not survive their atmosphere or just do not have any appeal to them.

Military

They have a very small military as the harsh environment of their planet makes it useless to most species. This force takes the form of a number of police frigates and a few destroyers. The only reason they ever created this force was because of alien contact. Prior to their encountering other intelligent life forms they never had a military or police force of any kind.
