"We will never yield."
a Xarantine battlecry.
The Xarantine are a species allied with the Federation but just inside of the Klingon border who prefer their independence but have no problems working with others. Their massive defensive system was constructed using some Federation technology and many of their engineering experts and was almost completely destroyed by the Borg in 2381.

History

Located just inside the border of the Klingon Empire, the Klingons view them as being weak. However in 2151, the Klingon Raptor-class vessel IKS Somraw raided a Xarantine outpost and looted Xarantine ale to celebrate the victory. What the Klingons did not know was that the ale was poisoned. Falling ill and being attacked by Xarantine ships, the commander of the Somraw eventually decided to retreat into a Q'tahL class gas giant's atmosphere.

They have a long history of conflict with the Klingons and only the possibility of Federation intervention and the fact that the Klingons have usually had more pressing concerns elsewhere with in or on the borders of their Empire have allowed them to retain their independence.

Xarantine Station was a drydock facility for Starfleet starships in orbit of Xarantine. The USS Excelsior headed to these facilities for repair in 2290 prior to exploring the Reydovan sector.

In late 2379, the USS Enterprise-E was docked here as well for repairs after the Tezwan incident and prior to heading to Earth for the wedding of William T. Riker and Deanna Troi. The Enterprise's inspection team boarded and observed the crew while at Xarantine.

By 2379, the Xarantine Stellar Array and the Poloma Observatory were part of the Starfleet Perimeter Defense Network. This was a system of made up of a series of long range scanners that acted as a defensive sensor grid.

Both USS Enterprise-E officer Data and Section 31 used the Defense Network to verify the route of the freighter Caedera and the freighters that it transferred contraband cargo to headed for Tezwa.

Xarantine was the site of a battle during the Borg Invasion of 2381. The drydock and the sensor array were destroyed. Also the Xarantine civilization on the planets surface was seriously damaged. Over ¾ of the entire population was killed.

At one point the Federation had feared that the entire Xarantine civilization had been wiped out but many of the females and the queen had been rushed underground and secured deep beneath the surface of their world.

Now they are hard at work rebuilding their cities and infra structure with Federation assistance. Construction on a replacement drydock and the sensor array should soon be completed.

Government

It seems they are governed by a matriarchal system. The head of this system is a Queen who is the mother to every single female on the planet. They all serve on her council and enforce her laws, orders and policies. Each female governs a different section of the planet itself.

Description

In many ways they seem to closely resemble Terran ants but with a few radical differences. They have a head with 2 compound eyes, 3 antenna for hearing and sensing smells, motion and heat. Their mouth has 2 external sharp mandibles for holding and cutting things and 2 other flexible external mandibles for holding and inserting things into their mouths.

They have a torso which is upright with 4 arms. These arms have 2 joints and end in hands with 3 fingers. Just behind 2 of these hands are razor sharp blades that fold in out of the way when not in use. On the females these blades are larger than the males. On each side below the arms are 4 small openings that admit oxygen directly to their lungs.

Their lower body section is level with the ground and has 4 legs with 2 joints each. The feet each have 3 clawed toes that allow them to grip just about any surface and even to climb just about any cliff or wall.

They do not wear clothes but use a number of belts or harnesses to carry any equipment or tools that they need or might use.

The only difference between the males and the females is that the females are slimmer and less dense with heavy muscle mass than the males. On average they all are between 5’8” and 6’4”.

Physiology

In many ways they seem to closely resemble Terran ants but with a few radical differences.

One such difference is that males on average live about 50 years and take about 5 years to reach adulthood. Females live to be about 100 years old and take about 10 years to reach adulthood. A queen takes about 20 years to reach adulthood and on average live about 200 years.

The very first thing that an adult female or queen does upon reaching adulthood is to select a brand new egg with a male in it. This egg is then treated to a special process that changes it into a breeding male. Once this male has reached maturity the female or queen breeds with him, then kills and eats him.

Each female, queen will only mate once in their life but can continue to produce eggs for the duration of their life. The queen only produces female eggs and the females only produce males.

While they have excellent vision they do not seem to see colors. This may explain the total lack of any color in their buildings, facilities and manufactured goods.

Psychology

The males seem to be totally subservient to the females and lacking in imagination. Their entire life is based on the need to work and obey.

The females on the other hand tend to be very imaginative and quickly grasp new ideas and concepts. Remarkably they can then communicate these ideas to the males, thus enabling them to perform above and beyond their normal ability.

Religion

No true religion, however the males seem to be totally devoted to their queen and treat her with great respect bordering on reverence and tinged with a hint that she has goddess like abilities. In fact all the females receive this kind of devotion and obedience although it does not come as close as the respect that they feel for their queen.

Mythology

None that have been revealed as of yet.

Society

The males live to serve the community and the female that both gave them birth and controls, commands every aspect of their lives..

Culture

They do not seem to have any form of culture. Work is the only activity that the males ever seem to do and the females are too busy overseeing their lands, males and work projects to have any time to relax with such frivolous activities. .

Customs

They do not seem to have any for the same reasons that they do not have any form of culture.

Technology

Inferior to the Klingons and the Federation by about 50 to 100 years in regards to military tech. Medical technology is even more limited and primitive and seems to only be used for the females and the queen. Food production, mining and manufacturing are also less advanced than the military technology.

Main reason for this is that they were able to reverse engineer certain Klingon military technologies that they captured for their own use. Also a mysterious 3rd species would sell them certain military tech that enabled them to continue to be useful as life fire targets for the Klingons.

The Xarantine have no chairs, stools or benches. If they are awake then they are standing. Also they do not have any doors anywhere except on food storage facilities.

Economy

No trade with any one other than a mysterious species that seems to have been selling them military technologies while meddling in the war to ensure that it never ended. There are no luxury goods of any kind anywhere on the planet.

Military

They have established defensive outposts and maintain a rather large fleet. While not as advanced or impressive as the Klingon ships that they tend to face it has been enough to prevent their being taken over and absorbed into the Klingon Empire.

For the most part this fleet is made up of smaller ships with the largest majority being patrol, frigate and destroyer types with only a small number of light cruiser class vessels.
