Lieutenant Commander '''Varaan''', a [[Vulcan]], is the Chief Engineering Officer on the {{USS|Darwin|A}}, as of stardate 239211.23. He had returned to the {{USS|Atlantis}} after a long period as a Deep Cover Operative for Starfleet Intelligence. He was assigned as Officer of the Deck and Intelligence Liaison, and as of 239205.25 he was also the Chief Engineering Officer. He was then reassigned as the Chief Intelligence Officer on the relaunched {{USS|Apollo|A}}, as of stardate 239207.13. He was the Chief Engineering Officer on the {{USS|Triumphant}}, as of stardate 239209.22. He is also the former CEO and First Officer of the {{USS|Paladin}}, former First officer of the {{USS|Steadfast|A}}, and former commanding officer of the USS ''Atlantis''.

Varaan's primary drive in life is engineering, and has been for over half a century. The interest started in his youth, and has guided his career choices. He has deviated into the Intelligence field several times, both in and out of Starfleet, but somehow has always returned to Engineering. The Advanced Starship Design Bureau (ASDB) recognizes Varaan as one of the top minds in '''''Starship Architecture''''' and '''''Systems Integration'''''. Varaan has either been involved in or lead teams that designed such starship classes as the [[Cutlass class]] Carrier for Starfleet, the [[Crossbow Starfighter]]s, both the [[Brendan class]] Escort and the [[Cobra class]] starfighter jointly designed with [[Krieger, Jacob Russell|Admiral Krieger]], and the ''Shendarin'' class Science vessel contracted by the Vulcan government. He is routinely consulted by the ASDB on various projects, and offered a permanent position there, but for some reason that he is unwilling to share, he would much rather continue his life journey on randomly assigned Starfleet vessels.

[[/T'iana|T'iana]] (dob: 238107.09) - currently the only child of Varaan and [[/T'lani|T'lani]], T'iana was conceived when T'lani came to visit Varaan during a period of shore-leave for the {{USS|Paladin}}. Their daughter was born while Varaan was on mission, and so he missed being there. He had never met his daughter until he returned to [[Vulcan (planet)|Vulcan]] before taking command of the {{USS|Atlantis}}.
