'''Lieutenant Commander Zaaia Leix''' is the {{age|2361|08|21}}-year-old acting first officer of the {{USS|Astraeus}} under Captain [[Mei'konda]]. She previously served in the Starfleet Marines as a Starfleet Intelligence officer.
She was born on Velestus to mother Maia Leix and father Detan Leix, both of whom operated a civilian freight service. She spent most of her early years aboard an older civilian ship, the ''Velox''. From a young age, she was always fascinated with flying. When they were between runs, her father would let her take the helm, teaching her the ins and outs of maneuvering the craft. But at the tender age of ten, tragedy struck. Their freighter was attacked by a Naussican pirate group and her parents were killed trying to protect her and their cargo. Still recovering from the trauma of the incident, Zaaia was sent to Earth and taken into the care of her only living relative, her maternal grandmother Aileen O'Grennan.
At age 18, she enlisted in basic training with the Starfleet Marines and served as a combat pilot for four years as part of the Talon Fighter Wing, working her way up to Sergeant Major. She then applied for advanced training and graduated 18 months later, receiving a promotion to the rank of Warrant Officer. She continued her climb up the ladder, eventually reaching Chief Warrant Officer, First Class. Following serious injury to her left leg, she applied for Starfleet Academy and graduated four years later with majors in Intelligence and Communications/Operations. She then spent the next four years working her way up to Lieutenant Commander.

She's a go-getter and is passionate about her work. She has good analytical skills and is methodical, making her successful in all that she does. When working, she is serious and focused. This is a contrast to her social life, however, where she's modest and has little interest in the intricacies of socialization, making her a bit socially awkward. To those who don't know her, she appears aloof and uninterested in engaging with others. Her no-nonsense attitude can be a bit intimidating to those who don't know her. Despite her social awkwardness and difficulty conveying what she means, she has a gift for reading people almost instantly. This makes it easier for her to cover up her social awkwardness.
She is infinitely practical and resourceful. While she strives to look and be her best, she's not obsessed with the latest trends. Her patience and discipline mean she doesn't give up easily and is extremely ambitious. Her sarcastic, dry sense of humor leaves many guessing and though she's traditional and conventional in most areas of her life, she's a closet weirdo with an interest in eclectic art, culture, and music.
