Gaia grew up on an Orion Freighter commanded by her father. As an only child, she was doted on by both her parents. Her childhood among the stars left her fascinated with ships and space, but the Orion social culture didn't give her many options in regards to a career. When she reached adulthood, she decided to apply to Starfleet Academy.
