Tad Cooper was born on May 10th, 2362 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA, Earth. His father Jack was a retired Starfleet marine and his mother Maria was a homemaker. Jack often socialized with his friends in the New Jersey State Police, and Tad was enthralled by their stories of exciting chases and catching criminals. By the time he was four Tad knew exactly what he wanted to do.
At age 21 Tad received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and became a NJ State Trooper. He took to the job like a fish to water, especially when he was assigned a car and partner for highway patrol duty. Unfortunately it wouldn’t last long.
When Tad was 22 he was involved in a serious crash while on duty. He was severely wounded and extensive surgery was required to save his life. While he was in recovery he learned his partner was killed in the accident and an investigation was under way. In the end he was cleared of any wrong doing, but was released from the force. He applied to the police departments of nearby cities and even other states, but was refused each time.
Just when Tad thought he’d be forced to give up his career in law enforcement his father suggested Starfleet Security. Willing to take any opportunity to stay in the field he loved, Tad applied to the Academy.
Tad is a generally quiet person. He takes his job very seriously and when on duty keeps a businesslike attitude. While the surgeries he required after the accident were successful, he’s had enough medical attention to last a lifetime and tends to be distrusting of medical facilities. He suffers from a mild sensitivity to bright light, but instead of getting what he considers unnecessary surgery to resolve it, he prefers to wear dark glasses to mitigate the effects. He sometimes wears his old wide-brimmed trooper hat to help keep light out of his eyes as well as serve as a memento of his previous life. Although he understands he wasn’t directly responsible for it, he is still haunted by his partner’s death and will do his utmost to ensure the safety of anyone he works with.
