A few years before the events of Unification in 2367, a small group of Romulans were educated in the teachings of Surak in hopes to one day repair to schism between the Vulcans and Romulans. This small group of defectors risked everything to get off Romulus. Among them was a young couple, awaiting the birth of their first child. During the trip to Federation space, Varel, Re'Maru's mother, went into labor. The Medical facilities on the Smuggler's freighter was substandard to say the least.
