Temperature at the equator averages 36°C.• Bolarus IX often experiences turbulent weather, including hurricanes, typhoons and monsoons, which happen on an annual cycle. Due to the relative lack of land on the planet, storm fronts tend to be severe over the ocean, as there is little that would cause them to break. However, there are seasons of good weather in addition to the cycle of storms.

Bolarus IX is home to three main continents, Rabinu, Rasara and Bol’ki. These continents lie along the planet's [[MA:Equator|equator]], making Bolarus a much more temperate planet than [[MA:Earth|Earth]]. Its land mass is mostly hydrosphere, although aside from the major continents there are other smaller landmasses; B’olos, Izos and Kastron, each named for the tectonic plate to which they are attached. While these are technically continents in themselves, they are comparatively very small. Due to the increased proportion of water to land on the planet, tectonic shift is somewhat slower than normal, and nearly all of the planet's fault lines line below the surface of the ocean. As such, mountain ranges are very rare, but ranges of island [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archipelago archipelagos] are common.  

Hundreds of years ago an unusual storm front developed over a large area very close to the southern ice cap of Bolarus IX. It became stronger, but conditions at the time prevented it from breaking or moving. As such, a standing storm developed, which remains in situe even at present. Manifested as a violent electrical storm accompanied by torrential rain above an oceanic [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maelstrom maelstrom], scientists have been unable to determine what caused this strange atmospheric event. [[MA:Starfleet|Starfleet]] scientists have debated various ideas, but without the ability to watch its original formation they are unable to settle upon a final hypothesis.

The third power looked upon its rivals with scorn, and developed a somewhat [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jingoism jingoist] stance. They were not resentful of the other races, but they were thoroughly convinced that their societies were not, and would never be, as productive as those that resided on Bolarus IX. They refused to help either side and pressed for their traditions and cultures to be accepted planetwide at the expense of all else.

Bolian society revolves around a group dynamic, the most notable result of which is a lack of territorial boundaries. However, townships exist due to the co-location of family homesteads that have developed and built up since the Bolian equivalent of the [[MA:Medievalism|middle ages]]. The typical Bolian family is extended rather than nuclear, as aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, offspring, siblings and parents all live as close to each other as possible. It would be impractical, given the number of individuals this would entail, for everyone to live under the same roof, but where this is not possible, they live as neighbours, or as close as physically possible. Whenever Bolians are married, the family extends, resulting in an even larger township. As a result of this, Bolarus IX is home to [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megalopolis_(city_type) megalopoli], which are in effect cities with millions of inhabitants. The largest such [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megalopolis_(city_type) megalopolis] is Hosppat, home to 22.67 million Bolians, while the capital city (by virute of being the biggest township when the Bolian Central Council chamber was erected) was Lommat, with a population of 17.65 million.

Due to the limited amount of land available, some townships have been built in aquatic domes beneath the surface of Bolarus IX's world ocean. These cities are protected by reinforced tritanium as well as forcefield technology, with multiple failsafes in case of power failure. Such domes must contend with oceanic "weather" patterns in the form of tides and deep-sea currents, and therefore weather-prediction systems are integrated into control centres throughout these domes. Giant tidal engines use the undersea currents to produce energy, and also help to regulate the impact of the tides upon the domes themselves.

Caregivers are held in very high regard in Bolian society, as they are providing the ultimate service to the largest team on the planet - the entire Bolian people. The medical system is funded entirely by the Bolian Central Council due to its importance to the Bolian people, although this deals strictly with the business of ailments and physical and psychological medicine. Care for the elderly does not form a part of the medical system, as it is the very nature of Bolian families to care for those who are too infirm to look after themselves. Moreover, it is considered a great honour to be able to do so. Ailments are increasingly rare on Bolarus IX, as research has been conducted into genetically engineering food sources. This coupled with replicated foods and research into the Bolian diet has led to Bolians having an excellent [[MA:Immune system|immune system]].

Child care is undertaken by families from birth. It is not left to the parents to raise the children as the entire family will voluntarily pitch in to cover the various duties required to raise an infant. Elementary and secondary schools do not exist on Bolarus IX, as families take responsibility for educating children to understand Bolian principles from an early age as well as for covering their basic educational needs up to university level. Lessons are taught by word of mouth, as well as by example where possible.

To off-worlders, Bolian food can sometimes be unpalatable due to the tendency to use aged meat in their recipes. This is due to a lack of interesting spices that grow naturally on Bolarus IX, and so the Bolians rely on this practice for flavour. Their body chemistry is easily able to handle meat that would be considered to be off by other species. Vegetable dishes are appreciated more by non-Bolians, and [[MA:Bolian tomato soup|Bolian tomato soup]] is a favourite [[MA:United Federation of Planets|Federation]]-wide. Bolian drinks are often served in [[MA:United Federation of Planets|Federation]] bars, including [[MA:Bolian tonic water|Bolian tonic water]], and Bolian sunset martini.

Bolarus IX operates on much the same level of technology as other [[MA:United Federation of Planets|Federation]] member worlds. However, most notable is the technology that they have developed to support their [[MA:Agriculture|agriculture]]. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agribusiness Agribusiness] accounts for only 5% of the Bolian economy due to massive advances in food production technology, including genetic engineering and the introduction of replicators. This means that animals on Bolarus are now not bred or deliberately killed for food sources.

Bolarus IX is rich in heavy metals, which mostly occur on the ocean floor. These metals are mined in subterranean, and indeed sub-oceanic, reinforced mine shafts. The ore that is mined is then processed in sub-oceanic domes that have been built around subaquatic townships.
