Eratis was born with a large magnetic field inside it which causes it to spin rapidly. Radiation is emitted from each of Eratis' poles and further examination by the science department on Deep Space 17 showed that the magnetic field is tilted with respect to its axis. Thus, creating a rotating beacon which creates periodic bursts of radiation and solar flares.
