Laika was born and raised on Bajor, to a Bajoran mother and a human father. Her father named her after the dog Laika, one of the first Earthen animals in space, and passed on his curiosity and love of exploration. Laika was always a stubborn child who knew from a young age that she wanted to follow in her father's footsteps and join Starfleet. She was also fiercely independent. Her curious nature and strong sense of justice lent themselves well to her dreams of exploring space, and she was able to make it into the academy with little trouble. What was surprising, though, was what she chose to study. Laika had never come to a decision about what branch of Starfleet she would pursue until she applied to the academy and noticed a shortage of mental health professionals. While it may not be the most natural career path for Laika to follow, she determined that it was the opening that most needed filled.
