Family Background
The Hayashi family had lived on the Japanese island of Okinawa for seven generations, owning an expansive farm near the coast that grew sugar cane, pineapples, and a variety of other fruits and vegetables. Ichiro was the second child of Hayashi Munemori and his wife Aishun. Munemori was a farmer all his life, always looking back to a preferred past that valued tradition and hard work. Meanwhile, Aishun was a distant cousin of the Sato family of United Earth fame and was always looking to a brighter future and new horizons to explore. These two competing interests would have a strong influence on Ichiro’s values and mindset as he grew up.

Childhood
From an early age, Ichiro worked on the family farm. He woke up near dawn and would help his father and brother care for the crops. Ichiro helped build structures and pick fruits and vegetables. He also helped his father to repair a few of the simple machines his father (reluctantly) allowed to be used on the family’s farm. He learned the value of hard work and doing things the old-fashioned way, growing up without replicators, holosuites, and other modern conveniences. But he didn’t want to be a farmer forever.

Ichiro would sneak out of the farmhouse at night and climb up into a tree and look up at the stars above. Limited light pollution left the sky clear and gave a great view of the cosmos above, including the bright twinkling lights of Starfleet ships and orbital installations. He knew that, someday, he would explore every star.

Federation Constable
Eager to explore the whole wide galaxy, Ichiro signed up with Federation Security as a constable as soon as he was eligible. His first assignment was to the New Paris colony, where he was quickly put to work investigating what turned out to be sabotage of the colony by a Cardassian agent. During the early stages of the Federation-Cardassian War, his assignments changed frequently. These assignments included two outer colonies, Mars, Andoria, and Grazer III. His accolades included being wounded in the line of duty twice times and providing security at an event for Federation Councilor and future Federation President Jaresh-Inyo which nearly descended into a riot on Grazer III. He was on track to be an investigator and potential future director, but an assignment to Luna in early 2354.

Love at First Sight
While spending time in a bar in Armstrong City, Ichiro met former Starfleet brat Adele Källström. Her parents had both disappeared on assignment during the Federation-Cardassian War, leaving her in the care of her aunt. Now an adult, she had been looking for a direction in life and shared the constable’s desire to explore. During the rest of his brief tour, he spent lots of time with Adele and they got to know each other. Adele was finishing her undergraduate studies at Gemini University and couldn’t follow when Ichiro got a new assignment.

Ichiro, meanwhile, had found one of the things that he had been looking for out there. Someone to travel with. So, he retired from Federation Security and waited for Adele to earn her degree. After that, the two went on a series of trips across the quadrant. In 2354 they had a destination wedding on Risa. Their first son, Ise, was born the next year. Another son, Casper, was born in 2357. The couple split their time between their home in San Francisco and the Hayashi family farm in Okinawa.

Not wanting to travel with very young children, Adele took advantage of the opportunity of stability to apply to the Carrington Medical School in San Francisco. She was accepted and started her coursework there, leaving Ichiro as the primary caretaker of their sons during the day.

Family Man
He felt being a father came naturally, teaching his young sons the importance of helping around the house and instilling in them a deep curiosity about the world around them. During Adele’s time in medical school, Ichiro was also finally able to meet Mrs. Greta Källström. Her ship had been caught in a spatial anomaly, but survivors were eventually discovered and were able to return home, including Ichiro’s mother-in-law. She moved in with the family for her first few years back on Earth to get reacclimated to modern life.

Adele earned her medical degree in 2363 and decided to celebrate with their first major trip as a family. Ichiro, Adele, Ise, and Casper’s first trip was to the garden planet Demeter VII. Future trips would take them to Qo’noS, Bajor, Trill, Vulcan, Casperia Prime, Starbase 118, and Cait among other places. These major trips usually took place at least once a year. Between those vacations. Adele worked at a hospital in Tokyo while Ichiro took a job as a detective with the Okinawa Prefectural Police. Crimes were infrequent but did provide some insight into criminal behavior. Especially crimes of passion once most material wants were satisfied.

Ise wanted to follow in his mother’s footsteps and applied to the Tokyo Academy of Medicine once he was able. He had always been a bright and inquisitive child and had read through many of his mother’s old medical textbooks in the family’s library at least once if not twice. Casper, meanwhile, was very loud and adventurous. He was always getting into trouble and showed a lot more interest in doing than reading. In high school, Casper became quite skilled at baseball and was considering the route of being a professional athlete. Both of their lives would change in 2374.

Loss
The Dominion War shook Earth like nothing since the Borg incident. Ise and Casper, feeling a deep sense of patriotism, both decided to enlist in Starfleet. Ise dropped out of his medical school program to join along with his younger brother. Ise became a field medic and Casper was an infantryman in the Starfleet Marines. Both of them were quickly deployed to help with the mounting Starfleet losses. Ichiro and Adele were very proud of their boys and their selfless service to the United Federation Planets.

That changed in late 2374. During one of several attempts to retake Betazed, Ise and Casper’s units were attacked by Jem’Hadar occupying forces. Casper was killed in Ohmallera while trying to drive the Dominion forces from a section of the city. Ise died by Houdini subspace mine while trying to evacuate an injured officer later that same day just outside of Ohmallera. A team of Starfleet officers arrived at the Hayashi farm to deliver the news as well as a Federation Cross awarded posthumously to Ise. However, their remains were not retrieved and returned to Earth until the end of the war in 2375.

Adele never recovered, and spent the next year trying to process what happened. She left the house for a walk on the evening of Stardate 237601.18. She was discovered on the edge of the island a few days later, having fallen off a cliff edge onto the rocks below. Whether it was accidental or intentional could not be determined.

Ichiro, now alone with his grief, found various ways of coping with it. He traveled to Betazed and other Federation worlds affected by the war and documented reconstruction efforts for the Federation New Service until 2379. After that, he became very active with the Federation Service Org, a volunteer civilian service dedicated to supporting members of Starfleet and their families. The group started as a group of daredevil pilots delivering care packages and items from home to troops on the front line during the Dominion War. From those humble origins, it expanded its services to support Starfleet members as well as their families, especially families who could not join their loved ones in the field. He supervised networking events for Starfleet families on Earth, helped organize tours by musicians and other entertainers at far-flung Starfleet postings, and helped in a pilot program to use holocommunicators to give Starfleet officers an opportunity to be more present on the home front while deployed. In 2392 he moved to Starbase 118 and opened a small studio in the Ashalla District of the station’s Commercial Sector to showcase his watercolor art.

None of his new solo travels provided him with what he was looking for. He applied to Starfleet Academy in 2395, wanting to serve the Federation the way his sons wanted to before their careers (and lives) were cut tragically short.

A New Beginning in Starfleet
Ichiro entered Starfleet Academy in his 60s, not that he was going to let his age slow him down. He’d always kept in good shape and was confident that he would easily make it to 130. He majored in security and earned a minor in biology that would build on his existing forensic knowledge. He considered many of his fellow security cadets to be too focused on combat and action. While important parts of the job, he considered investigative skills and using his head over his phaser critical to being a good security officer.

After graduating, he joined the Criminal Investigative Division of Starfleet Security and moved between various postings wherever there was need for an investigator. Ichiro maintained full readiness and was frequently performing the duties of a normal security officer. But he focused on tasks requiring deeper investigation, either as part of the posting’s main mission or routine crimes committed at a posting. He broke up a ring of Ferengi pickpockets on the promenade of Deep Space 26 and solved a murder that arose from a case of infidelity aboard the Charleston. He was transferred to the Constitution-B just before Frontier Day after the ship encountered a series of mysteries that could benefit from a skilled investigator.
