Savel tries to convey the stoic and calm nature that most Vulcans try to show. Though, the Vulcan Ensign is still young, and there is much for him to learn about what it truly means to be in control of one's emotions. Sometimes, it is hard to suppress a desire to let them free in certain moments. Specifically, he has had issues suppressing feelings of pride and anger in certain situations. Sometimes those two can go hand-in-hand with one another. Savel is sure that logic, maturity over time, and the discipline required of him by Starfleet will all assist in conquering that challenge.
Savel is about as typical a Vulcan as one may ever come across. He was raised by both of his Vulcan parents who rarely, if ever, deviated from the Vulcan way of life even though they did not live on their species' homeworld. Alpha Centauri had enough of a Vulcan population that Savel did not grow up feeling like he was growing up in the "wrong" place. As such, most of his time was spent with people of the same species until he left Alpha Centauri to attend the Academy. That was his largest exposure to other cultures and peoples, but he never really found a way to settle in during social situations. That's a skill that has eluded him for his whole life. As such, the stoicism and bluntness that come naturally to a Vulcan like Savel have caused issues with certain aspects of life aboard a starship. Mainly when it comes to finding friends or general acquaintances that tolerate him outside of a professional capacity. It's an aspect of himself that he looks to improve on after being encouraged that it would increase his effectiveness as a member of the crew.

Upon Savel's graduation from Starfleet Academy, Starfleet commissioned him as an Ensign before being assigned to the USS ''Artemis-A'' as a Security Officer. The Vulcan joined the crew as they were deep into their mission of assisting the Da'al after a meteor impacted their homeworld. His introduction to some of the crew's senior staff was less conventional than most. He met the ship's First Officer, Genkos Adea, while the Betazoid XO was restrained on a biobed following an attack on the ship's Chief Tactical Officer, Vitor Silveria. After an incredibly quick briefing on the current state of affairs, he was introduced to two other department chiefs before his first away mission. Savel met with Lt. Gabriel Osuna, Chief Security Officer, and Lt. Talos Dakora, the ship's Chief Intelligence Officer, along with Ensign Flint Kader, just prior to beaming down to the surface of the Da'al homeworld to recover a shuttlecraft and two missing security ensigns. Their mission was ultimately a success, thanks to the actions of Lt. Hallia Yellir's team, comprised of Ensigns Hiro Jones, Jovenan, and Luxa Lorana, that were able to pacify all of the planet's inhabitants, which allowed for the safe departure of the recovered shuttle and security officers.

Following a successful mission on the Da'al homeworld, the USS ''Artemis'' remained in orbit to assist with relief and recovery efforts while also allowing some of her crew some downtime in the system. While a group of the junior officers on board were eating in the mess hall, Ensign Jovenan pitched her idea of how they should spend their leave period. She suggested to Ensigns Savel, Flint Kader, and Luxa Lorana (aka the Lower Decks Gang) that they should go on a camping trip in a region of the planet known as La'kso Canyon. The group agreed to join Jovenan but were initially unaware that this trip had actually been a secret intelligence-gathering operation on a group of Da'al that had potentially been behind the disaster that struck their planet. That fact didn't become clear to the three ensigns invited until they had been ambushed by two Da'als while hiking through the canyon. The pair initially tried to appear as friendly park rangers but quickly turned on the group, attempting to hold them hostage. Lorana attacked the lead Da'al, ending up severely wounded in the process, and opened up a window of opportunity for Savel and Flint to subdue the two Da'al while Jovenan went to help Lorana. Almost as soon as the engagement ended, the cavalry arrived to assist. Commander Genkos Adea, Lieutenant Talos Dakora, and Lieutenant Gabriel Osuna, along with a sizeable security force, arrived in a runabout. They immediately swarmed the area, with Dakora and Adea helping save Lorana from her injuries while Osuna helped secure the area with Savel. After Lorana was recovered and on her way back to the ship, a sweep of the canyon was conducted, and a hidden hanger was discovered. Inside the hanger, the team found a Da'al shuttle believed to have been used to direct the meteor that had struck Maranuge IV. Once the evidence was collected, everyone returned to the ''Artemis'' for debriefing and to prepare for their next assignment.
