Humanoids are often surprised by it because they take the fact that they didn't discover space travel at face value among other things. But the real reason they didn't develop their own had a lot less to do with inability and more to do with finding it unnecessary at the time considering they live in a veritable paradise. But if they wanted to create their own, it wouldn't be outrageously difficult for them to pick up.
