Ilana was born on Alpha Centauri IV but wasn't raised by her biological parents. Rather, when she reached the age of five she was adopted by Glen and Emilia Ganarvuss, a human couple that lived on the planet. Growing up, Ilana was an obedient girl who enjoyed math and was involved in a number of sports. The family moved back to Earth when Ilana was nine. In high school, Ilana played and excelled at volleyball, basketball and track. Her father was proud and encouraged her to pursue those endeavors, while her mother suggested a more intellectual route. Splitting the difference, Ilana studied math in university while continuing to play basketball and compete in track. Ultimately, however, Ilana found herself drawn to a less academic career path. After graduating from university she was accepted into Starfleet Academy, where she majored in Com/Ops and Security. Upon graduation from the Academy, Ilana was assigned as a Security officer to the ''USS Atlantis'' in the [[Par'tha Expanse]]. Following the unexpected transfer of ''Atlantis's'' Chief of Security shortly after Ilana's arrival on the ship, she was promoted to Lieutenant J.G. and given the mantle of Acting Chief of Security. When ''Atlantis'' was replaced in the Expanse by the newly minted ''USS Chin'toka'', Ilana was transferred with the same position.

Ilana is a strict rule follower, but through her experience with sports and mathematics, she has learned how work creatively within rules to achieve unlikely solutions. Her favorite aspect of mathematics was being able to take an equation and apply rules to it until she arrived at a solution. She takes a systematic approach to problems she's confronted with, but her competitive drive allows her to take shortcuts when necessary. She holds a rigid daily schedule and deviating from it unexpectedly can throw her off her game. While not outgoing, Ilana is fiercely loyal to the friends she has and bonds quickly with teammates when working toward a common goal. She also maintains a healthy relationship with any snack bar that may be in the vicinity which would be a problem if she didn't maintain a high active lifestyle.
