Martin was born in 2375 aboard a Starfleet vessel to a human mother, serving at that time as governor, and a Bajoran father and retired Starfleet captain serving as a Vedek. He lived on Bajor at the time of the planet’s admission to the United Federation of Planets in 2388. His parents’ involvement in the Federation and Starfleet, pressure from his older sister, and the tumultuous UFP entrance Bajor faced, helped guide Martin to decide to join Starfleet.

On Bajor, Martin developed a quick interest in the Security field and has studied martial arts in one form or another since the age of 15. He has never neglected his studies, and has undergone secondary training as a field medic both before and at the Academy. His interest in helping people drives him to stand up for the oppressed, and he abhors seeing anyone bullied or intimidated. Regardless of rank or status, Martin will speak up against such behavior, and because he is confident in his ability to defend himself, he is willing to put step toe-to-toe with anyone behaving this way. (He prefers phasers to fisticuffs with beings like Nausicaans or Chalnoth – he’s not foolhardy.)

Martin is aware of and appreciative of the wormhole aliens, but does not accept them in their current status as “The Prophets.” His father Vedek Poe’s fervent and unshakeable faith is one of the many things they clash over. Martin’s relationship with his mother is cool and polite, but he has reservations about actions she undertook during her gubernatorial career. He’s close with his sister Mira Mirna and speaks to her regularly – at a minimum, once a week.

Martin fancies himself a proper well-rounded Starfleet officer – he may be a Security officer, but he considers himself well-versed in medicine. Engineering is the subject he is least versed in and finds the most difficult to wrap his brain around, and while he appreciates the good work counselors do, he does his best to avoid spending too much time around them.

While they are not regulation, Martin carries a pair of gloves at all times. He says it is because his hands get very cold very easily, but in reality he prefers to wear them because he has recently discovered a very unhappy side-effect of his mother’s latent psi ability has been passed on to him: he sometimes has a flash of strong feelings about a person, or a powerful emotional response, when his bare hands come into tactile contact with another living being. The circumstances are temporary and only Martin seems to be affected; also, this does not happen with every person he touches. Nevertheless, it is unnerving for him and he does what he can to request permission from superiors to wear gloves whenever possible, and always avoids shaking hands. He has several different pairs of gloves to suit any situation. Aside from that, Martin is always the picture of a young officer dressed to perfect regulation, including never wearing his Bajoran clan earring while on duty.
