He spent most of his life as an artist, specifically in woodworking and making boxes. A visiting Starfleet relief effort came to assist a nearby settlement with a relief effort to recover from some sort of natural disaster in the wake of the Cardassian occupation and thus sparked his interest to join. He was conscripted into service for the Bajoran militia at age 11. Riley tried once to get into the academy, and decided to stay with the milita for a few years more before making a second attempt.. While in the Bajoran militia, he focused on small unit tactics, small hand weapons, hand to hand combat, rifles and piloting. His second attempt to join Starfleet was just after his promotion to first lieutenant, and it was unsuccessful. After a few more months of service, he managed to get into the academy and resigned his commission in the militia.
