Praria Markey had what other would classify as a lonely childhood. Her father, as a journalist, travelled a lot and for long periods of time, and her mother, working as a clerk in a hotel in Galway, spent most of the day at said place. And Praria didn't really see her parents a lot, and she remained at home with a family friend, Toz Virsel ([[Bajoran]]), to basically raise her. Early in her childhood this was more than fine; in fact she loved her parents' friend who played "Fix it, Gurgh" with her. But as she grew old enough to resent her parents' lack of time at home, she grew more separated from them, though she still loved them very dearly.
As a teenager she spent most of her time on computers, locked in her room and submerged in the cybernetic world. She excelled at school, though mostly because she didn't have many things to do to entertain her other than homework. She struggled to make friends, and even if she had good relations with mostly everyone, no one was really close to her.
And one day, Toz's daughter joined [[Starfleet Academy]] in the Command Division, and Praria began to consider about enlisting. But when she brought up the subject to her parents, they were entirely against, since they believed that "space was too dangerous". Her mother Miranda insisted that as a hotel clerk she had heard about many fatal accidents in [[Starfleet]], and her father Seamus had been even witness to such disasters, even if he himself admitted that they grew ever lesser.
After many fights over the subject, they agreed on allowing her to enlist only if she was assigned to space station, preferably one in the [[Alpha Quadrant]] with a more "controlled environment". Praria agreed to these terms and was accepted in the Academy a year after.
Once in the Academy, Praria struggled again with socialisation. She had a lot of social anxiety (as she still does to date) which to fight to overcome, but unfortunately her victories were short-lived. She found that the academic level was much higher than what she was accustomed to, and failed to find her footing at the beginning of the first semester. Nevertheless, she prevailed.
