Marcus was born to a Terran father and Magna Roman mother on Roma. His father was in Starfleet and as such wasn’t present for most of Marcus’s life.  Despite an aristocratic background, Lucretia wasn’t capable of controlling her rambunctious and adventurous son. Marcus, in turn, disliked the protocols and formal upbringing forced upon him and would often run out of the house to explore the streets of the city they lived in.

As he approached adolescence, Marcus joined a group of youngsters who practiced gladiatorial contest in the streets. He learned to mask emotions and hide injuries in order to maintain his double-life. When a knife-fight, intended to be harmless, grew out of control, he was slashed across the face and his secret was exposed. The family fallout which ensued pushed Marcus to full-blown rebellion and he joined more dangerous, serious gladiatorial contests.
