Tragedy struck in 2185. On their way back to Deep Space Six, something pulled their ship out of warp. It was an EMP pulse of some kind, affecting most of their systems. They found themselves in the middle of some kind of asteroid field that had not been on sensors previously. Without shields or deflectors, as well as engines, they found themselves smashed about in the field. After coming to rest on a large asteroid, the freighter found itself boarded by Romulans. Using equipment he had never seen before, the Romulans slaughtered everyone on board and stole their cargo. Valin only survived due to an explosion in the engine room which masked his life-signs but left him pinned for dead under debris.
